There are various factors that can cause and affect the disorder. Behaviors, thoughts and actions do not turn into obsessions and compulsions unless they go beyond the normal and influence our daily lives and routines.

An individual diagnosed with the disorder experiences over importance of thoughts. By means of a thought and action fusion, individuals identified to have Obsessions and Compulsions usually have greater probabilities of associating and connecting their thoughts with their actions and vice versa. If one has an OCD, the belief of causing harm to somebody is equated to harming them and thinking that nothing is wrong with it. The unwanted thought of harming others may also lead to the person feeling that he really wants to harm somebody else which is actually not true. Thoughts may be harmless but the consequences and risks of having them and when they become recurring thoughts become dangerous and will usually result to obsessions and compulsions. On the other hand, suppressing thoughts may only make the condition and symptoms even worse and severe. Excessive thoughts can be alleviated through Cognitive Behavior Therapy through exposing the patient to various situations and activities.

Another indicator of the disorder is the overestimation of danger. Individuals identified with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder misjudge or overrate the probabilities of meeting accidents, dangers and or mistakes. An example of this situation is the thought of being terminated at work. This happens when a certain employee thinks that a single mistake can lead him to termination from his job which is actually the otherwise. It is always probable that there are reasons why one is being afraid of something but in the case of OCD, they are irrational.

When having an OCD, patients usually have inflation of responsibility or they overestimate their responsibilities. This happens when a certain individual do not go to work for just a day and believes that the business organization’s operations will stop and cannot meet its quota because of his absence. This can be avoided by involving themselves in habits or thoughts that may neutralize or ease the possible negative outcome of their absence at work.

Overestimation of consequences or risks of probable dangers also happen. OCD patients usually believe that if they meet problems and dangers they will never cope and get over it. They believe that the consequences and or risks of such dangers will take their lives away or may drive them crazy.
