Treatments and therapies are available for patients diagnosed with OCD. One of these treatments considered is the medication. Medication is given and recommended to OCD patients with an aim of reducing the symptoms suffered by the patient because of his obsessions and compulsions and to alleviate his burden caused by the disorder. Medications are given in least dosage but having more benefits. The variation of medications given is dependent on the case of the disorder and on the will of the patient. Medication usually takes effect after two weeks of using the prescription. By then, gradual development on OCD and relief on the symptoms occur

It is not recommended to take different types of medication or just the attempt of it. A doctor or specialist must first be consulted before any medication process. Doctors are those who know better about the nature and background of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, thus they are those who can best prescribe and recommend treatments for the disorder. A doctor will normally give the patients dosages of anti depressants or antipsychotic medications or a combination of both depending on the gravity of the case. They can best handle obsessions and compulsions.

Considering medication as a treatment is a process. Therefore, it is not advisable to stop the use of it or try any other drug without consulting the patient’s attending physician. Though there is an improvement with regard to the existing symptoms, medication must not be stopped unless said by the doctor, otherwise a setback may happen. There are cases when medications need to be lessened rather than be stopped immediately for it may lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Medications are usually done for a year or a couple of year before the doctor will recommend to stop taking the prescribed medicines. If after the doctor has given the patient a lower dosage because of the improvements seen and after observation the obsessions and compulsions return, it is best to go back to the first prescribed dosage.

All medications have also side effects. Stomachaches, sleeping problems and too much sweating usually happen. If there are any untoward or unexpected side effects, it is best to address those to your doctor. The side effects produced by the patient’s medication can worsen his condition and affect his health. As a remedy for the occurrence of the side effects, over the counter drugs can be taken and other supplements like vitamins and minerals, as well as herbal supplements.
