Parents Are The First Educators Of Their Children Don’t Leave It To The School

In Australia today many parents constantly complain about the standard of education and their dissatisfaction with the teachers in our schools. They constantly criticise the government when a particular school, or particular group does not perform well in the school certificate or HSC.

The parents refuse to accept any responsibility themselves. They believe that it is the role of the school to educate their child and that they play no role. If they are asked to devote some time to helping out with a school activity or pay some money for additional resources to make the classes more interesting there is an uproar.

You will find that this mentality is more prevalent in NSW public schools as very often people who get something for free, place little value on it. In a private school the parent has to pay a large amount to have their child attend the school and it is unlikely that they would pay this type of money if they placed no value on education.

The reality is that parents are the first and primary educators of their children. Yes the school provides trained teachers who try and impart knowledge in arrange of subject areas but if the child does not arrive at school with a thirst for knowledge and an appreciation of the opportunities that education provides, no school will succeed in educating that child.

The beliefs and values of each child are moulded in the home. From the crib the child hears and sees how his or her parents react and deal with life and this becomes the norm. If for example, the parents left school early and do not see the value of education, unless there is someone else in the child’s life sending a different message this will be the child’s perception also. It is going to be very difficult for the teacher standing at the front of the classroom, responsible for 20 other students to change that child’s mind. If the teacher sets homework that causes inconvenience to the family eg. stops the child going out, a parent who does not value education will tell the child not to do it.

A conflicting message will be sent to the child from the parents and the school and this causes confusion.

There are so many problems with our education system at the moment and many could be rectified if it was generally accepted that the primary responsibility for education rests with the parents. The parents have to develop a respect for education and set minimum standards in relation to the commitment to work and study expected of the child. The parents and school must work in partnership with each having the best interests of the child at heart. In situations where the parents cannot give the level of support required to the child the government should provide a mentor for the child. It is futile throwing money at these schools for more resources and literary programs if the mindset of the child towards education is not changed.

Rather than commissioning another Gonki report into funding for education the government needs to look at the link between education and parents and provide funding for community programs that will assist children from disadvantaged backgrounds to see a different type of life. They need to learn to value education as a means of gaining all the opportunities life has to offer.
