Not only patients have the fear on their inattentive and hyperactive symptoms and disorder but also parents have greater fears than their children have.
They are afraid that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder will hinder their children’s growth. Research and studies show that taking medicines to treat the symptoms of ADHD may somehow affect the growth of the child in a matter of two to three cm only. This effect may be disregarded because they do not matter at all. Children’s growth may continue after they are done with their medication.
The fear that medications may cause heart attack to children also bother parents. There are some medications that may increase child’s heart rate and palpitations but they are just minimal. It must not be a concern of the parent unless the child is also experiencing heart problems or has experienced any of it in the past. It is also recommended that children must be checked by health specialists before taking any medications especially stimulants. Also, parents must give information to their attending physician if there are any genetic heart problems or any other illnesses that run in the family.
Parents also fear that their children will be dependent on the medication until they grow old. If children are suspected with the symptoms of the disorder, they must be immediately sent to the doctor to avoid any worsening of the condition and so that they will be treated out rightly. Medications usually last for a month or two unless the medication is not effected and must be changed. Parents must bear in mind that children need the medication so that their symptoms may not disturb them in their studies. Though it may continue until their grade and high school, there is nothing to be feared because inattentive and hyperactive symptoms will eventually disappear as they grow old.
Another fear is that children may gain a lot of weight on the medication process. Common medicines taken by patients especially stimulants may result to loss in appetite and decreased weight therefore parents must not be afraid of their children being obese because this will never happen. But parents must also be careful in choosing the medications that are given to their children. They must be aware of the various labels that are printed on every packaging of it.
Parents are also afraid that mental disability may happen. Research and studies have proven that the use of medications properly prescribed by health specialists will not affect the mental functions of patients in the long run.
