There can be different therapies for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients. The therapies and treatments vary on the obsession and compulsion symptoms of the patient. One of the therapies given to an OCD patient is the self therapy.
Under self therapy, an individual can do deep breathing which is also known s deep diaphragmatic or belly breathing. This kind of breathing can give relaxation to the patient who produces signals to the brain that immediately processes and turns down physiological arousal and stress levels. When patient does belly breathing, he experiences reduced heart rate, lower blood pressure and an effective breathing. These things manifest calmness and relaxation of the body and mind.
The very first thing one must do in belly breathing is to sit or to lie in a comfortable and relaxing position. This can be done by putting your one hand on your chest and the other hand on the stomach. Other patients find it even more comfortable when closing their eyes. Closing of the eyes is not a requirement in the routine. It must be first begun by breathing in the nose. When breathing in, one must only feel the expansion of the stomach. To make sure that it is done correctly one must see if his hand on his chest does not move while the hand on the stomach moves in an outward direction.
When done with the deep breathing, blow the air slowly by the lips as if blowing a balloon and feel the stomach fall to the spine while the hand on the stomach is the only one moving. The exhalation should be as twice or thrice as the inhalation duration.
Another is the mindfulness meditation. Once done with the deep breathing, mindfulness meditation is the next thing to be done. It is the practice of being aware of the thoughts without resisting them or prejudging them for no reasons. By doing this meditation technique one is not affected with his obsessions and compulsions. While doing deep breathing, one must pay attention to his obsessions and compulsions and let them bother you until they are eventually lost. It is not common for individuals to feel higher levels of anxiety when starting to practice mindfulness meditation for they reduce recurring and unwanted thoughts, fears and doubts. One should not be worried of this routine for they will eventually be used with it and will feel the relief from the obsession and compulsion symptoms.
