Should You Let Your Child Have their Own Cell Phone?

Should your child have a cell phone?

Most children believe that they should be allowed to have their own cell phone. In fact the majority of children do in fact have their own mobile devices and use them extensively.

The phones that are available now are not simply that is used for talking to friends. The modern smart phone has most of the functions that you would have expected from a state of the art computer only a few years ago.

The modern Android or Apple Phone can be used for texting, emailing, updating social media profiles, surfing the web and taking photos and videos.

A lot of parents are also of the opinion that their child should have a mobile phone of their own. They make themselves believe that if they provide their child with a cell phone they will always have the means of getting in contact should they need to do so. They basically believe that having a mobile will actually help to keep their child safe. But is this the case?

There are a number of possible downsides to a child having their own cell phone.

Cyber Bullying

Once upon a time bullying was something that only occurred in the school yard. The big kids bullied the little or weaker kids. It has been going on for as long as anyone can remember.

Modern technology has now opened up a completely new way to bully someone. You no longer have to be bigger than your victim. You simply need to know how to use a computer.

Cyber bullying is a phenomenon that originated with the invention of text messaging and emailing. It is simply a matter of writing unkind remarks about someone and distributing them online. The effect on the target individual can be devastating particularly if the email/text is passed along and other comments are added along the way. The targeted individual often becomes withdrawn and depressed and the child's parents are generally unaware what is causing the problem.

Addiction

You are unlikely not to have noticed the amount of time young people spend on their phones. They are forever operating the key pad with their thumbs. Some children become so obsessed that it actually becomes an addiction. They simply cannot stop themselves. In some cases it has been reported that children are using their phones for up to six hours per day.

Reduced Attention Span

Experiments have been carried out to determine the effect that using a cell phone has on a child's attention to their surroundings.

There are lots of situations where being distracted can be extremely dangerous. The University of Alabama have carried out experiments to determine if using a cell phone affected a child's ability to react in potentially dangerous situations. In a closely monitored experiment it was discovered that children (particularly in the 10 to 11 year age group) that were distracted by their mobile devices was several times more likely to be involved in a road accident.

Increased chance of being mugged

Statistics show that almost half of the muggings carried out on children in their teens in London were carried out solely to steal the cell phone the child was using. Android phones and iPads are very desirable targets as they are high value and can be disposed of easily by the robber.

Health Issues

There is lots of coverage in the press regarding potential health issues related to the use of cellular phones. Although there seems to be some disagreement about how damaging they may be to your health the general consensus seems to be that there is at least some health risk.

Consider all of the facts

It is easy to believe that it is essential that your child has a cell phone but think carefully and make certain that you consider both the pros and the cons of supplying your child with their own cell phone.

Monitor what your child does on their Cell Phone!

You may not be aware that you can actually monitor what your child is doing online. It is extremely easy to install a cell tracker onto a smart phone.

Cell phone software, such as Easy Spy, will allow you to monitor virtually all of the activity of the phone. You can monitor conversations, email messages, text messages and most of the social media content of the phone. There is even a GPS tracker included that enables you to find out the exact location of the phone at any given time.
