Should Your Limit The Amount Of Television Your Children Watch?

There are many schools in NSW that recommend to parents that television viewing be totally banned on school nights or at least severely restricted. Many parents are worried that implementing a rule such as this would be too harsh on their children.

My response is always that it is your job as a parent to parent for the adult you want your child to become, not to ensure a happy child in the particular moment.

I don’t believe that school-age children need television during the week. The morning should be a relaxed time where a nourishing breakfast is eaten, a book is read and perhaps some spelling words are heard. There should also be some positive talk about the goals for the day.

After school, if there is not any sport, or another activity it should be home to do something physical in the yard. If here is no yard, time should be made for a walk around the block, or a visit to the park. After that’s time for homework and even if no homework is set, the child should get into the habit of summarizing what was taught in class that day. These summaries make excellent notes for exam study.

After a shower and dinner there should be some family discussion or private reading as the child winds down for bed.

Switching On The Television

Once the television is switched on you lose your child. He or she tunes out of your world and into fantasyland. There is no-longer time to think, or ponder, or be creative. Television is a type of panacea for anything that went wrong in the day so that the child does not have to deal with it. It is escapism at its best.

Also, television exposes your child to the marketers. He or she will be bombarded with the advertising messages that advertisers so desperately want to push out and gradually your child will come to believe that he or she will be happier, or more popular, or better at sports if they buy a particular product or service. They will fail to recognise that happiness does not come from extrinsic things but only as a result of being at peace with yourself and liking who you are.

Another reason to restrict television is the fact that you cannot be confident that the ratings attached to shows are appropriate and most parents do not have time to sit and watch television with their children in the evening, just in case, something inappropriate is shown.

In view of all the negatives it is far simpler to have a blanket rule of no television on a weeknight.
