Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may continue from childhood to teenage life. Though inattention and hyperactivity eventually fade as the patient grows old, re-evaluation and keen monitoring must still be done to update the condition of the patient. Teenage years are the most challenging stage of life for both parents and teenagers. Peer pressure, failure in school and community and having low self confidence usually make it hard for teenagers to cope with their disorder.
Individuals at this point of life usually want independence from their parents. They try to do things which they are not permitted to at their age like the intake and addiction to alcohol and drugs as well as engaging themselves in sexual activity. These things can result to consequences that may affect their disorder and worsen their inattention and hyperactivity symptoms they are currently experiencing. This is also challenging for the part of the parents on how they will guide their children and take good care of them considering their children’s disorder and their stubbornness at their age.
In this case, parents must be directed and must be strict but considerate in setting up rules and grounds in their teenagers. Every rule set must be clear and must be implemented and strictly pit into action. By this, teens will be responsible of their actions. Making lists and chats may do also. Household chores and tasks of the teenagers must be properly set and organized in a way that they may be motivated to accomplish those. It can be done by placing notes on the kitchen or in their bedroom so that they will be always reminded. When the rules are not followed and are disobeyed, parents and guardians must properly respond with these situations with all calmness. Punishment can be given to teenagers but in as much as possible that their self esteem and value will not be lowered. Anger and hot temper may not do well with ADHD patients if parents that it is the only way for them to be disciplined.
In their ADHD case, teenagers must also have time pouts and time to have fun and mingle with their friends. By this, they can have outlets for their all day activities that can cope with their attention problems. As teenagers are away from home, it is recommended that parents may impose curfews and restrictions in driving. Parents must also listen to their children’s requests and opinion. By this, there will be an understanding between both parties.
