Teenager Accused Of Trying to Lure Young Girl Using Facebook

Nineteen-year-old old George Anthony West was arrested in Arapahoe County, Colorado on charges of attempted sexual assault of a child and Internet luring of a child. His alleged victim is 13-years-old and in 8th grade. The girl sent George Anthony a friend request on Facebook because he was “friends” with one of her friends.

According to the Littleton Police Department’s arrest affidavit, George Anthony sent the minor child messages that read, “I’ll make you get on top of me and ride me…I just want to have sex,” and “I’ll make you scream daddy.”

The parents of the alleged victim said they closely monitored their daughter’s page and were surprised that George Anthony had slipped by unnoticed. They found out that George Anthony was contacting their daughter after they took the girls iPod Touch away as punishment. Their daughter was afraid to tell them for fear of losing her iPod.

Facebook can give teenagers a false sense of privacy and a feeling of anonymity that can put them in danger. Online predators can use your teenagers “likes” in order to strike up conversation. They can also use your child’s profile to find out where the teen is located. They often post too much personal information on their page. They will also accept “friends” who are total strangers or friends of friends. This is very dangerous. In 26% of online sex crimes against minors, offenders disseminated information and/or pictures of the victim through the victim's personal social networking site. (Journal of Adolescent Health 47, 2010)

Teens are not always honest about what they are doing online. As parents we need to be aware of their Facebook activity. We should check their privacy settings, review their friend list, and ask questions. Some teens will allow their parents to “friend” them on Facebook, and will then create another page that is hidden from their family. I would also suggest an affordable monitoring software. Most monitoring software will allow you to record your teens activity in chat rooms, social networking sites, instant messaging and email..

Please speak with your teens about online predators. Explain to them why it is important not to post personal information on Facebook and other social media sites. Monitor their activity and watch for warning signs. It is very important for parents to be aware of their teens online activity and do what they can to keep them safe. And make sure you report any inappropriate activity to the website or a law enforcement agency immediately.

Street Talk

I feel as though when it comes to cases as such, both Facebook users messages should be used to determine the nature of the incident. As much as we would not like to believe it, teenagers can influence this kind of activity and when you add someone much older then you it should be with caution. If the girl claiming victim was encouraging this kind of conversation then both parties should be held accountable for their actions not just one. The facts of this case presents the situation as parents catching their daughter talking to the suspect after seeing the messages on her ipod, they were not informed by the girl that this man was trying to contact her so it can seem that she played a part in the conversation, have they released her messages? Maybe if she had told him not to contact her and informed her parents then it would change the situation to a preditor case but we have to look at the realistic stand point and understand teens will be teens. Truthfully, West is still quite young himself and if he was given the impression that this conversation was okay then she should be accountable for her actions too. Facebook users must watch what they do online and if your young you must be responsible. Our kids must know it is not okay to have this kind of conversation especially with a stranger.

Wow! That's upsetting. What a monster. Did they lock him up or is he on the loose? Kids just don't understand these dangers, and it's probably good they don't focus on them. They think Facebook is a toy and everybody is healthy. As a parent, I'd be very vigilant, not to invade my child's privacy, but to protect them from harm. Thanks for writing such an important article.

Thanks Stacy. The first thing that I did to your article was click the Like and share it with my friends. I'm glad the girl's parents are monitoring their child's online activities (others are not). I guess the word "Friend" is overused on the internet that even stranger can easily be labeled as friend, especially in Facebook.

I believe the word "friend" is overused even among my adult friends. I am sometimes shocked when they say they do not know who a person is whom they have just friended. My biggest worry is my pictures. I have a little girl so I am very careful who I friend.

I agree with Tracy. It's a balance with kids but they so need boundaries and to know that we're only acting in love and concern when we seem harsh. I refuse to consider FB for my kids. They're still young but that's just the point!
