The Bond Of Motherhood

There is an immediate and undeniable bond between parents and their children. It happens the moment a mother finds out that she is pregnant. Automatically, and despite having not given birth, a woman becomes a mother and life is forever changed.

Elizabeth Stone is credited with the quote: “Making the decision to have a child –it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body”.

Many women change what they do, where they go or what they eat. It would seem that they’re caring more about themselves but really it’s the beginning of a lifelong sacrifice for the welfare of her child.

Mother’s are attuned to their children.

They know what they need and when they need it. They love their children beyond conscious comprehension. She does what it takes to ensure her offspring has the best of her in whatever way a mother knows to give it.

It doesn’t mean that mother’s always know or do what’s best. I think that it does mean that to the best of their ability and, with the tools they have available to them, mothers do everything possible for the welfare of their child.

There are exceptions.

Mother’s who don’t seem to know how to be a parent. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis said, “If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much”.

She may have a point although it seems that whether a child is dragged up or raised up they generally turn out OK with the constancy of a mother in their life.

In defense of these mothers it must be said that obtaining a piano doesn’t make anyone a pianist and some of us were never meant to be musicians.

Pearl Buck wisely noted “Some are kissing mothers and some are scolding mothers, but it is love just the same”.

It is probably true that the ideal mother is as much fiction as the ideal marriage is but it doesn’t mean that it’s not very good all the same.

Motherhood is the greatest act of hope.

It is the greatest learning of unconditional love, patience, compassion, forgiveness and understanding. It changes a woman’s viewpoint, enlarges her heart and suddenly makes her a mother to every child in the world.

And in summary I’ll defer to Dr Spock (Benjamin that is!) who counseled that after much study in the different methods of bringing up children the conclusion is that “what good mothers and fathers instinctively feel like doing for their babies is the best after all”.

AJ

Motherhood is the most rewarding and frustrating job in the world. It takes a lot of patience, but it is absolutely amazing to watch your child learn and grow. It is undeniable the bond between a mother and daughter is something very special, but I see an equally special bond between me and my son and my husband and my daughter. There are nothing like them.

Must agree AJ. I think I actually get more love off my sons! ;-)

I love to watch the still existing bond between my wife and our daughters, but I still enjoy the special connection between a father and his little girls. My youngest daughter, now 37, still remains my little girl and still loves a hug from Dad every now and then.

Coming from a family of 3 girls I can attest that the youngest ones are the most special.... hehe... but that could be my bias!
