The Importance Of Background Checks When Hiring Babysitters
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Would you trust your child/children to someone you just met in a shopping mall and claimed to be a trustworthy babysitter? Of course you would never do that! However, it seems that lots parents come close to doing that this when they are looking for a babysitter. Many parents will hire a babysitter after a short talk and absolutely no background check.

Two recent examples come from the North East US. The first example is in Connecticut, where a nanny was accused of stealing checks from the parents who hired her. Police found out that this nanny had been moving from family to family committing similar thefts. She was finally arrested and charged with multiple accusations of larceny, forgery and fraudulent use of ATM cards. None of her victims had taken the time and the effort to perform a background check.

In New York, a newspaper article stated that a young male nanny was arrested by the police charged with molesting four boys. He had been recruited because of word-of-mouth references from other parents in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods of the city.

There are so many examples of how people need to protect themselves when hiring in-house employees, particularly one in charge of taking care of their children such as a nanny, babysitter, or au pair. It’s extremely important to do a proper background investigation.

Most parents who hire a babysitter never check her references or perform background check. To prevent yourself from becoming a victim, ask your babysitter for current and previous addresses, as well their birth date and social security number. Inform them that you are doing a record search. It is still her right to refuse to have such a background check performed. See if she consents to investigation. If so, go ahead and begin with previous address look up searches. Also search Social Security number for public criminal records and civil filings.

Use the search engines like Google and Yahoo to see if anything shows up right away. If everything seems okay, then use some of the online screening software available at a monthly, yearly or one time subscription fee.

Never risk hiring a person who has been charged or convicted of child sex abuse, child neglect or has a criminal record. Protect yourself when recruiting someone in charge of watching your child/children like a babysitter or nanny.

Remember, most parent never check references or perform a background check before hiring a babysitter. Don't be such a fool!
