Nanny salaries vary according to several factors that include the number of working hours, location, status as a live-in or live-out nanny, experience and number of children:

- A full time nanny will usually work an average of 45 hours per week and longer schedules will require a higher salary.

- Nanny salaries may also vary according to the location. A nanny will usually earn a higher salary in major metro areas such as New York, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, San Francisco and Seattle. This is however not an absolute rule.

- Live-in or live-out: A live-in nanny's salary may be less though there is little or no difference in some locations.

- Experience: it’s obvious that an experienced nanny expects to be paid accordingly.

- Number of children: a nanny who takes care of 4 children will likely earn more than someone who is only responsible for one single child.

How Can You Become a High-End Nanny?

Most nanny agencies are willing to pay more for a nanny with some degree in education, nursing or child psychology. As a matter-of-fact, several nanny agencies are now recruiting at institutions that major in child psychology, education and development. Most nannies start on a salary like $30,000 but it can quickly increase in a couple of years.

Training

Some employers would like their nanny to be experienced and to have completed relevant training course. Others don't really mind and want the nanny to work their way anyway. Several nanny agencies provide training.

Qualified and Flexible

An employer will be impressed with a nanny who is willing to show initiative. For example, a nanny who is ready to take her employer’s car in for service, pick up dry cleaning and do household chores will be much appreciated. Other acquired skills, such as having passed a swimming certification, being CPR certified and having completed some childcare training look impressive on a resume.

People hire a nanny to make their life easier, so you should expect working long hours (something like 60 hours a week) and also holidays.

Are There Other Benefits?

There are usually other benefits such as health insurance, bonuses and lifestyle in the case of high-end nannies:

Health insurance: It’s typically 50% paid by the employer for the first year, then fully paid after first year. Bonuses: Some families pay their nanny an incentive bonus after the first (and subsequent) year's employment.

Bonuses generally express their appreciation for continuity of care for their child/children as that they won’t have to spend more time, energy and money looking for a new nanny.

Lifestyle: The homes where high-end nannies work in are commonly 'luxury' homes. The food is usually gourmet standard. Such nannies will often enjoy a car as part of their salary. Foreign trips are usual. Of course, the nanny is still working but she enjoys first-class travel and sometimes visits to expensive restaurants, amusement parks, museums, and amazing shopping trips.
