What Is The Key To Having A Happy Child?

In today’s world parents mistakenly believe that it is their role in life to make their children happy. We often do so much for our children that we exhaust ourselves. We drive them to school, drive them to a myriad of after-school activities, help them with their homework, write a note to their teacher making an excuse if their homework is late, buy them the latest gadgets so that they will not feel left out and buy them the newest food in the supermarket because they ask for it. We make our children the centre of our lives and their own lives and this makes them extraordinarily selfish and ‘me’ focused.

Yes, our children feel loved but they also grow up believing that they deserve things and then more things and that it is our job as parents to provide these things. In short we help our children develop a bad attitude that sets them up for an unhappy life.

Set Family Values And Priorities

To avoid spoiling your child it is important that, from a young age, you make it clear to your child what your family values and priorities are and they should not be your child’s happiness. Yes this is important but it should not be the primary goal of your family. A good goal may be for each family member to live in a supportive family environment where they can develop their full potential and give back to society.

It is also not enough to simply state the family goals and priorities. You have to live them. For example, for your children to excel academically it may be necessary to implement a family rule of no television on a school night as homework and sufficient sleep are the priorities. This won’t necessarily make your child happy because they will miss the popular programmes their friends watch but you are the parent and this is a good decision for your child. You also have to model service to others as a family priority and this may be through gathering old toys and clothes to give to a charity, or together selecting a gift for a disadvantaged child at Christmas.

It is essential that you give your child the opportunity to learn the satisfaction of making another person feel good as this can give great strength when faced with personal problems. When a child is aware of the types of problems other people have, they can more easily keep their own problems in perspective and feel gratitude.

Developing Character

It is important that parents learn to parent with the end goal in sight and that is independent, productive adults who live life with integrity and compassion. You do not achieve this by giving in to the momentary desires of your children.
