There are many surveys that have been conducted and it shows that there are about 8% of school age children with ADHD and there are 10% teenagers with ADHD.
It has been said that ADHD is the most common disorder in terms of behavior between children and teenagers. ADHD can be detected as early as childhood years and can be diagnosed by medical and mental health professionals. However, in cases that it has been neglected on their early childhood, the disorder has been carried out until their teenage life. You can notice some symptoms of ADHD in teenagers. These symptoms are restlessness, too much hyperactivity, lack of focus, and very low attention span. Due to these following symptoms, you can’t deny the fact that it caused disruptions and may hinder the life teenagers want to have normally.
ADHD symptoms in teenagers such as learning disabilities, emotional problems such as severe anxiety may be at hand. Early detection can greatly help those teenagers with ADHD. This is why it is significant to seek medical attention as soon as early symptoms can be noticed on your child.
The ADHD symptoms that occurs in teenagers are very similar those in children. Signs and symptoms such as having hard time paying attention, lack of focus on responsibilities given, recklessness, easily distracted or annoyed, and having anxiety level that is high which causes their difficulty in sleeping. In school, teenagers usually are forgetful especially in doing their homework or school projects. They can’t stay in one place for a longer period of time. No one wants to have ADHD and it’s not their fault or intention to act this way. Because of these following actions, the emotional and social inter-actions of teenagers are affected. They usually have low self-esteem and possibly have no friends at all. The heightened anxiety makes them worry about school grades or performance that causes it to further interfere with their learning. We can’t also deny the fact that their relationships with their families, friends, teachers, and even in their community can be affected as well.
On the other hand, the family and the ADHD patient must not loose hope. There are ways to help them manage this disorder. It is strongly recommended to seek medical help and obliged on the regimens, medications, and treatment plans given. Family support, love, patience, and understanding are greatly needed as well. Open communication can really help teenagers with ADHD as they can be aware of the difficulties their child is undergoing and proper actions can be given. At school, as teachers become aware of it, they can adjust and give focus on the ADHD child allowing them to learn in methods that work best for them. So allow the teenager with ADHD to cooperate to help him or her face this life’s challenge.
