Where The Wild Things Were

A story, a book, about a boy by the name of Max is a huge favorite and was a loved favorite of my sons while growing up. It is the story of this boy banned to his room by his parents and while there he is taken on a journey of fantasy into a mysterious land where large and grotesque "things" live. Yet these creatures crown him king.

Where The Wild Things Are

So yes, I am talking of this children's book written by Maurice Sendak. Sadly to say, Mr. Sendak passed away at the age of 83. His is a name that when spoken may not be remembered by many. But mention the book he wrote in 1963 and people instantly know. It is a book that truly captures in one fashion how children might respond to events in their life.

For me, as a parent I would have my sons restricted to their bedroom when they had done something wrong. I thought depriving them of the television set or video games would make them think twice about repeating the offense. Little did I understand as a learning parent that I may have been doing my sons a favor by using this method of punishment.

The Wild Things Are Where

As in the story by Maurice Sendak, when left to his own room, Max was actually left in a large and endless world. Max's imagination was allowed to open up his mind to this endless world and endless possibility. For my boys, they too exercised their imaginations while tucked away in their room. I know for certain it allowed them to not consider what they had necessarily done wrong. I tend to think it gave them time to figure out how not to get caught again!

The great thing that I noticed though is in the years that followed, I could see they also used that time in their room to develop their imaginations. Now do not be alarmed, they did not spend nor were they locked in their rooms for the duration of their pre-teen and teen years. To them it probably seemed like years upon years and any young child would think the same. But the wild imaginations they developed were done within their minds during these short retreats in to their bedrooms.

Are There Wild Things

Our imagination is a great place to work out life's big issues. How big of a snowball could actually be built during the winter time? Will a balloon hold one or two gallons of water before bursting? These issues, ever increasing in seriousness swirl in one's mind when forced to stimulate yourself from within. It has provided my boys with the ability to think of and find solutions to those problems they encounter today in their young adult lives.

And we know that life throws some pretty wild things at us. Life is a mysterious place where large and grotesque "things" happen. We each need the imagination to find our way through the jungle of things that we will encounter. That imagination will turn those large and grotesque "things" into great and wonderful "things" which lead us to greater success.

Yes, Wild Things Are

I would not say that you should banish your children to their rooms with the hope of developing imaginative children. What I would say is that today's world has a million and one things to serve as input to one's mind. We need time, without any inputs, to sift through everything that fills our mind and process it. We need the time to allow our imagination to put it all together into something useful for our lives.

A wild and imaginative mind may seem counterproductive to our ordered and proper society. But having one will allow you to think past the the current situation. It will allow you to see things that others can not. You may not become king of the wild things, but you will know where the wild things are and be able to do something about it.

Stay inspired my friends and keep your children inspired.

My daughter and I enjoyed uncountable journeys into this book. I will check to see that this book is in the path of her two children. Thanks for re-awakening those memories, Joseph. Looking forward to reading more of your articles.

Great article as usual Joseph, have never read the book, don't know why. The concept of sending the kids to the room has always worked, not to teach them not to do it again but how to be more careful of being caught, is that not teaching the kids something? To use the brain, to become street wise, all lessons in life. I knew I shouldn't have sent my son to his room.....

Are there wild things? Loved your insightful comments here. Gave me a new appreciation of this well known story which, I admit, was not a favourite of mine. Did you see the movie? Just curious as my kids didn't like it, and I wasn't too impressed either, but that could simply be a lack of interest in the whole concept. Enjoyed your article however and really feel I finally understood more of what the author was conveying.

The movie was poorly done. Typcial in that the book is always better than the Hollywood interpretation.

Well that's true. Spoken like a true lover of the written word! Having said that I loved the movie of TinTin and look forward to the next one. There are exceptions to every rule! ;-)

I have self-published two books (Lulu) and the last two through a publisher (Wipf and Stock). Always interesting, the publishing part, to get a book out on the market. I do it mainly as something for my kids, gradnkids and future generations of my kids to have.
