Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

This year, 2012, is Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Year, as she has now been the Queen of the UK and the Commonwealth for 60 years. Queen Elizabeth is only the second British monarch to make it to the Diamond Jubilee, the other being Queen Victoria who reigned for 64 years. There will be lots of official visits all over the UK and the commonwealth which are being attended by different members of the Royal family. The Queen and Prince Philip have made the decision to remain in the UK and the Queen is sending the younger Royals to represent her abroad and it has just been announced that the end of the celebrations will be marked by a Garden Party at Balmoral on 7th August.

The real celebrations will take place over the bank holiday weekend from 3 - 5 June and people are being encouraged to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by having street parties and picnics on 3rd Juneand I 'm sure there are committees up and down the country getting together now to plan some local celebrations for the Monday and Tuesday too.

Officially there will be the Thames Jubilee Pageant where up to 1000 private boats from the UK and the commonwealth will escort the Queen down the River Thames from Putney to Tower Bridge. All types of boats including rowing boats, historic, sailing and motorised boats as well as kayaks and canoes will be taking part and about 1 million people are expected to line the route.

On 4th June a musical concert is being organised by the BBC and Gary Barlow. This will take place at Buckingham Palace and feature musicians from both Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth and on the same day it is planned that more than 2000 beacons will be lit in the UK and across the world in celebration. A website has also been launched where you can register events that are taking place and as at today it is already planned that:

  • 60 beacons lit across the length of Hadrian's Wall (A wall built in the very north of England by the Romans in order to keep the Scot's out!)
  • Church Tower beacons will be lit on the battlements of HM Tower of London, St James's and Lambeth Palaces in London, the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh and Killyleagh Castle in Northern Ireland.
  • His Grace the Duke of Westminster is going to be lighting Beacons on three of his estates in Sutherland Cheshire and Lancashire.
  • Flash Church of England Primary School is The Highest school in Great Britain and has just 10 pupil, they will be lighting their Beacon in the village of Flash, Staffordshire.

The weekend will officially finish on 5th June with a thanksgiving ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in London followed by a formal carriage procession by the Queen.

If you are one of those doing the event planning for your local celebrations then you can take some comfort by imagining what is must be like having to plan all the official Diamond Jubilee Celebration events that are going to be taking place throughout the UK.

Maybe you will get to see some of it on the TV, as she is Queen of the commonwealth countries as well (Australia, Canada, India and more) there is usually quite a bit of coverage outside of the UK too

Nice to learn about other countries cultures and events. I can remember when I was staying with the British soldiers when I was in the service and went to walk across a field they called the Queens field and almost got shot. Not knowing someones culture when visiting can sometimes get you in a little trouble. So we salute the Queen for all her service and commend you on the information you provided. Good job.

Yes it's always a good idea to find out the "rules" before visiting a foreign country. People have been known to go on holiday and spend years in a jail cell for not knowing, or caring, about the laws of the land they are visiting!
