Hey guys, here we go another great hot summer. It's time to host those killer parties people can't wait to go to and don't stop talking about. So here you will find a list of ideas and necessities for an awesome Pig Roast.
First things first....You need a Pig!! No, not the last call girl you would bother after the bars close. A real freshly butchered farm raised pig. Prepare to pay 1-2.00 dollars a pound. Typically a 100lb pig will yeild approxamatley 50 pounds of pork. Thats pulled pork for sandwiches, so you could make a lot of sandwhiches from that. I would say a 200lb pig would serve an average party. If you invite 50 people your probably looking at 100-150 people coming.
These next ingrediants are completly essential for a great Pig Roast. You will need music, alcahol, a bouncy house, Ice sculpters, pool, fire pit, bug spray, tents, split 55 gallon drum, charcoal, chairs. The alcahol is totally up to you, maybe you don't like to drink, or you are too young to drink. Alcahol is not needed..........Wait a minute what am I saying. Ofcourse its needed, its a pig roast not a 3 year old party. Make sure when hosting the party you buy a keg or 2 of beer, and make a special House drink to pass around like, Apple Pie Moonshine or Purple Panty Droppers. There are a couple of recipes I offer on those two House Drinks. A shot ice sculpter is a nice touch too.
Ah the Spit. I normally use a split 55 gallon drum filled with charcoal. I rigged to large forks one on each side of the spit so that the skewer can sit above the coals. You will need about 10 bags of coal to complete the pig. Basting and turning the pig is a must, and is a full time job on its own. It can take up to 10 hours and longer to cook your pig. If it seems all to complicated you can have one catered, but prepare to pay big bucks for the service.
Entertainment!! This is the fun part. I have a pretty big back yard so my parties always kick a$$. Music, get a band for a few hours and follow it with Karaoke. Maybe you have a friend that plays acuistic and sings pretty good. That'll work too. Make sure you have a place for your gusts to cool off, a pool, shade, water slide, lake. A pool being my first choice, but if you have none and do not live on the water dont get discouraged. You can normally rent a blow-up waterslide for a few hundred dollars. At the same rental place I recommend renting a bouncy house for the kids if any. Normally they will give you a discount for renting 2 units.
Party games, you need something to do in between or during band sets. Beer pong, power hour, volley ball, dodge ball, or flip cup. Anything really, just something to keep people busy. I normally have a few tables of beer pong close by to the keg. Then you can set up tournaments and make it interesting.
Your party is going to last a long time so be prepared. Build your fire and set out the chairs. People love to relax around a fire with music and conversation. Even if its 100 degrees out they will sit next to a fire. Make sure to set a hose or bucket near by incase of accidental spreads.
Serving alcahol at your parties is a big responsability. I normally set up 5-9 tents for people to crash in. I don't like my friends or anyone drinking and driving so the keys go in the bucket if they come to my house. You don't want to be part of the reason someone is dead or seriously injured. All of this mess can be prevented just by taking these simple precautions.
So now you have the Pig on the spit, the games are going, music is playing, drinks are passed out, the fire is lit, sleeping quarters set, but no one is here for your party!! The last necessity for a Great Pig Roast is people. Don't forget to invite your gusests. Remember if you invite 30, its more likely close to 60 will arrive.
Have fun, DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!!! Give me some feed back about your pig roasts.
