There are many Israeli patents registered in Israel, spanning a wide range of fields. Often, an inventor registers a patent to sell his invention to a company or investors, without intending to manufacture a physical model to demonstrate his invention. The patent authority does not require a physical model as part of the patent application, so often the inventor will not create a demonstrative model. However, a model may prove necessary for the inventor to verify the feasibility of his invention, i.e. to prove to potential investors that his invention can be made practically. In addition, when an inventor shows a model with a registered patent he has an advantage over other inventors who show a patent registration alone and can demand more for the rights to his invention. This advantage may be expressed as an income or as an investment that the inventor receives for his patent.
Investors are usually willing to invest more in an invention that is registered as a patent and has a model to demonstrate the function of the future product. A model does not have to be equivalent to the final product, or beautifully designed, i.e. it does not have to be a final prototype. Often an initial model is enough to show the advantages of the final product.
Inventors are often not interested in building a model. An alternative is to prepare an animated movie that shows the invention and the future vision of the inventor. The advantage of using an animated movie is in its low costs, relative to building a model. In addition, an animated movie can show the future product with a more updated design than would be seen on an early model. It is also possible to show multiple views of the product, for example sections, or internal parts, and it is can easily be shown to several potential investors at the same time, by duplicating the movie, as opposed to a model, of which only one is usually built.
Registered patents and Israeli patents are characterized by their originality and innovation. These properties can be demonstrated and enhanced by the script of the animated film, while stressing the elements of the invention that are important to the inventor.
Although there are many advantages to an animated film, many investors still prefer to see a tangible, physical model that allows them to examine the patented invention more effectively. Therefore, each case should be decided in accordance with the outlook and objectives of the inventor, the target market of the invention, technology, etc.
A registered patent is an important tool for an entrepreneur, but he needs to examine whether it is preferable to incorporate a physical model or an animated movie. For example software patents can be illustrated by means of a visual representation of a Demo to show the product in the future, but not the software itself.
Patents can be registered in many fields. Registered Israeli patents may often be registered overseas. If the entrepreneur is interested in selling his invention outside Israel, he may apply for an American patent, a European patent, or a patent in any other country where he wishes to protect his invention.
