Ballet Parents And Exactly How To Help
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Ballet parents worry. I know, I hear from them all the time. Because they do not know exactly how to help. Believe me, I understand this because I understand ballet. My mom didn't. She kind of stayed out of the cross fire - but she made incredible ballet tutus, so I was always grateful. She didn't hover.

But if you the ballet parents, feel like you should hover more - hover less - or learn exactly how to help, I'll give you some good ideas.

The big world of ballet is a subculture. It is uncompromising, elite, superficial and demanding. But it is ballet and it is so amazing! There is no argument with that.

If you have a dancing son or dancing daughter, I will bet that sometimes you just do not know what to do or say about the stress, worries, the competition, the ballet exam nerves... the worries about gaining weight. But...you have a growing child. Should she or he be counting calories already?

Worries About Gaining Weight

Your dancing daughter may have already read "Dancing On My Grave" by Gelsey Kirkland... about anorexia and drug addiction. She may be counting calories and weighing herself everyday. Well, I hope not, but this is not so uncommon.

Ballet creates an arena for the micro-management of weight. When I was growing up I was skinny. My mother used to force me to eat - I was always satisfied with little food. But, when I started my professional ballet training, all the older students I revered were obsessed about their weight.

They were worried about having a boiled egg for breakfast on Fridays, when we all lined up and got weighed by the principal of our school, then it was posted publicly. She thought she was doing us a favor. I developed a weight problem... I worried and worried, and started gaining weight.

This can happen to any dancer. It is not unreasonable to become susceptible to the obsessions of the profession. And this can happen to your dancing son too.

As parents, maybe you would enjoy learning about optimum nutrition for your dancing child - and yourself! It's not something that is different - but maybe it's something just a little more. Maybe your whole family can achieve optimum health, together.

Eating on the go is often necessary. For your dancing child and for you too. Developing strategies to get good snacks will help you both.

Is an eating disorder developing? Or maybe just a little disordered eating? I know it is more work for you, but being able to explain what healthy oils are and why your dancer should not be cutting back on them, will save you a great deal of frustration in the future.

Dancing children deserve all the support that you can give them. And YOU deserve all the support you can get, as ballet parents.

You don't have to be able to sew fabulous and professional looking ballet tutus to be excellent dance parents. You can find out exactly how to help.
