Belly dancing belts are also referred to as hip scarves, coin belts and wraps. There are many different things to choose from when choosing a belly dancing belt. The style of music, the weight and colours and also the material used to make the belt are important things to know before you buy a belt online.
Some belts can be a foot long and others called waist belts are only a few inches long. The shorter the belt, the faster the belly dancer needs to move her hips in order to get a great chime out of the movement. If the music is a fast drumming style, a shorter hip belt would work best.
Some hip belts are full of coins you can’t even see the colour of the belt. Other belts have tiers of coins spaced out to make less of a chime when movement occurs. When you go to purchase a hip belt many times it will say how many coins are on the belt. I.e. “this is a 128 coin hip belt” Some coins are also heavier than others which would make the entire belt weigh more and the dancer would need a lot of hip action to gain momentum. Usually the more coins a belt has, the more expensive it will be.
The most common colours of hip belts are different shades of blue, red, white and black. It does not matter what colour is chosen; some hip belts come in multicoloured format or even tie dyed. All that remains important is that the colour of a hip belt should match the belly dancers top or bra.
Materials used for making hip belts are chiffon, velvet. Some materials are stiffer than others. If a hip scarf is heavy, velvet is normally used as it is a stronger material and can hold the weight of all of the coins.
There are also many different designs of belts that match the style of dancing. Some tribal belly dancers wear no coins at all and just wear hip wraps with fringe, shells and beading. There are also belts meant to be worn with pants that are just made up of chains that you can wear around your waist.
As you can see, there are lots of different styles of hip belts to choose from. Pick something you like and you can have fun with. If you are just starting out with your belly dancing then don’t worry about choosing something too fancy and expensive. Any type of belly dancing belt would work well.
Enjoy your shopping!
