Don\'t Do it Again!

You should never do the same trick again. It's another rule or 'guideline' of magic that we all need to follow if we want to become great. We should at least refrain from doing the same trick for the same person on the same day. If you want to meet up with your friend the next day and do it for them again, then fine. Although if I were you, I'd wait at least a week to show them again.

What does it mean?

Doing a trick again means to perform the same effect for the same people in the same setting within a few seconds after you just performed it.

Why do they want you to?

I have found there are two reasons why people ask. The first being because they do not want you to tell them how it's done, they want to figure it out for themselves. And I guarantee you if you do it again, they will figure it out. The second reason is because they don't believe what they just saw. Well of course they don't. You just did a seemingly impossible illusion. A mere miracle that pushes (or even breaks) the boundaries and rules of time, gravity and/or physics.

Why shouldn't I do it again?

Because. There is your answer. But if you want more of an answer, it's because people are going to figure out how it's done. It's as simple as that. How? There are various elements to an effect or illusion that you build up to the conclusion of the effect. This could mean something that you do right in front of their eyes that they don't see or making them look somewhere you don't want them to without them even knowing. This is called misdirection. For example, you drag a coin off the table and into your lap but the spectator thinks that it's still in your hand. Then you put the coin into your other hand (misdirection). You snap, you clap your hands and the coin has vanished. When you put it into your other hand, they have just immediately forgotten that you ever dragged the coin off the edge of the table and have exhausted in their brain that it could possibly be anywhere besides your hand. Their brains are not prepared for every move you are going to make during an effect. If you do the trick again, they will watch your every move more closely. They will figure out where the coin went and you are busted. If you need more clarification on this, please send me a comment or an email below and I will get back to you.

How will I benefit from not doing it again?

Other than the fact that they won't figure out how it's done and maintain your infamy, there is one reason. There are many effects which require a special set up before hand. If you do those again, you have to set up the effect all over again! Sometimes you have to make the person turn around or leave the room so they don't see your secret set up! That will save you a lot of time and headache in the long run.

Recap:

Don't ever do the trick again. These tricks are your treasures. It's very tempting to show a trick again, especially if you want to make them like you. People are going to beg for you to do it again, almost as much as they will beg you to tell them how the trick is done. But don't tell them and don't do it again. Thank you for reading and as always, keep the magic alive! Contact me with any questions.

Magically yours,

Scott Beardsley
