Rules Of Magic

All magicians have their own routine in magic. Some like to perform only with cards, while some like to use mentalism. Regardless, all magicians follow a set of unwritten magic rules. We might not have it in writing, but it is a code that is taken very seriously upon magicians. I can’t reveal any magical secrets (against the code), but I can share a few rules that I think are the most important for all magicians.

Rule #1: Never, ever reveal the secret on how you did the magic trick.

This rule is the most important rule for all magicians. A magician only has the attention of their audience as long as the audience is still trying to figure out how you did that. As soon as they find out how you did the trick, you are not amazing anymore. That’s why it is very important to keep a secret… a secret, especially in magic. What makes magic interesting is the secret behind the trick that nobody knows about.

Rule #2: Never repeat the same trick twice to the same person.

This rule is also very important. The reason why you can’t show the same trick to the same person is because the second time, the audience knows what to look for, and have a much higher chance into figuring out how you did that. Unless you’re an A Class magician, and your performance is uncatchable, then you should not risk attempting a magic trick twice no matter how much they beg you.

Rule #3: Practice, practice and more practice

The biggest mistake a magician can make is performing a magic trick before perfecting the trick itself. You will only make yourself look very bad and most likely reveal the trick (breaking rule#1). I know it’s very exciting when you have learned a new trick, and you just want to show the world. But if you really want to amaze your audience, you must practice a trick until you are comfortable with it. Especially tricks that require sleight of hand (card magic, coin magic) should be practiced more so that your hands can get used to it. Nothing more embarrassing than dropping the deck of cards in the middle of a performance.

Rule #4: Perform like its real

Another big mistake that magicians tend to do is make magic boring. They might know how to properly perform the trick, but they just speed through it with no performance. One, this makes your audience bored and two, it sometimes confuses the audience as to what happened. Magic is meant to mystify and amaze your audience. Your number one goal in magic should always be to make your audience believe that your magic is real. To do that, you must perform at a normal pace and add some acting into it. Snap your fingers, stare into their eyes, say magical words (abra kadabra, ala kazam). Whatever it takes to make your audience believe in what you’re doing. That is magical.
