If you are looking for a midweek Dallas adventure, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
While most of the excitement in any city happens on the weekends, Wednesday nights at Sons of Hermann Hall is hopping--Lindy Hopping, that is. For an entry fee of just $7 ($10-$15 on nights when there is a live band), you can experience swing dancing at its finest, with classic tunes in a classic dance hall.
Don’t Know How to Dance?
Don’t let that stop you! Start your night out at 8pm, with beginner dance lessons with basic steps and turns to get your dancing started off on the right foot. These lessons are taught by expert dance instructors, Jerry and Kathy Warwick. With decades of dance experience, you will be swinging around the room in no time. Scores of people take the beginning lessons--not once, not twice, but multiple times! Practicing these moves in a learning environment is an awesome way to hone your swing dance skills.
Once you feel like you have mastered the basics, you opt to take a “beginner plus” class at 8pm instead for just an extra $5! With so many different moves in swing, this class changes every week to expose you to new and exciting moves that you can continue to practice on the dance floor. From learning the Charleston to Lindy Hop and more, you can take your moves to the next level.
Wanna slow it down for a dance or two? Sons of Hermann Hall features a downstairs Blues Dance room with lessons at 9:30 and blues music playing until midnight. Blues dance, or slow dancing to blues music, lets you relax and get down while taking a break from the crowd upstairs.
Dancers of all skill levels come looking for a fun dance, and the easy-going atmosphere is perfect for beginners to try out new moves, so you can stick around after lessons until midnight, practicing your cool moves, meeting new people, and swinging the night away!
A Variety of Fun
If somehow your swing has started to sag, you can take a break and go downstairs to the bar where you can sit down, socialize, and sip a drink with your newest dance friends. With free popcorn and a variety of different alcoholic beverages, this is a great way to chill out yet still have fun! And did we mention Karaoke…?
Yes, Karaoke! At the downstairs bar, they have their own karaoke DJ with loads of classic and current hits that you can show off (or not)! With such an easy-going crowd, you never hear anything but fun, laughter, and singing coming from bar area.
A Word to the Wise
In order to be as comfortable as possible, we’ve included these tips!
If you are planning on wearing a skirt or dress, wear spanks or shorts underneath! Fast twirls, dips or kicks could kick your skirt up, and shorts can prevent any embarrassment.
Women, while you aren’t running a marathon, your feet may feel it if you decide to wear heels. Other phenomenal dancers might be wearing dance heels that they have specifically bought for dance comfort, but the best way to start out is with a Keds-type sneaker. These sneakers generally allow for easy twirling, are cheap, and won’t have your feet aching by the end of the night! If you still want to wear a dress, this popular shoe choice is often paired with dresses for a comfortable, yet somewhat dressy look.
Footwear isn’t just an issue for the ladies. Men, make sure to wear closed-toed shoes that will allow for quick turns, and won’t give you blisters by the end of the night! Most often we see some sort of dress shoe.
Men (or ladies), if you know you perspire more than normal, no sweat! Bring a backup shirt to change into! While everyone expects a little sweatiness while dancing hard in a room full of people, it is still nice to be able to start fresh halfway through the night.
So what are you waiting for? Put on your dancing shoes, and head on over to Sons of Hermann Hall.
