The Book Of Mormon Coming To Denver, CO

Trey Parker and Matt Stone may be best known for Comedy Central's long-running, controversial cartoon series South Park, but now they have added a new string to their bow with their musical "The Book of Mormon". This new project has been an award winning hit on Broadway, and now has high hopes for a national run beginning in Denver.

Winner of nine Tony awards, "The Book of Mormon" takes an alternative look at the idea of missionary work in Africa, telling the tale in two acts and expressing the two male lead's journey and discoveries through musical numbers backed by a full orchestra. Seeing the plight of the Ugandan nation, these two Mormon missionaries head to the country to help by educating the people with Mormon scripture. Things are not that simple however, as their naivety, poor understanding of the text and the Ugandan's preoccupation with more life threatening matters threaten to ruin their plan.

The musical is a humorous, satirical take on the practise and on Mormon scripture, that aims to look at religion as a whole and both its negative and positive influences. While critics gave mention and warnings about the religious and adult content - which is to be expected - they also mentioned how funny and touching the show was, recommending it greatly. Many commented that that the show was not just successful in its aim and message, but as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the musical genre.

"The Book of Mormon" began with a successful run on Broadway in 2011 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, which lead to it consistently being one of the top five selling shows on Broadway across 2011 and breaking sales records for the theatre. Following this reception, Parker and Stone have decided to trial the show in cities across the US and may possibly take it to England. The first stop will be there home of Colorado - an area that happens to be home to approximately 137,000 Mormons - with a trip to Denver. You can view availability of tickets for the Book Of Mormon musical while in Denver, CO.

On August 14th 2012, The Book of Mormon will be tested on audiences at the Denver Centre for the Performing Arts, at Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The Opera House is a fantastic venue to be holding the performance, with its 2,225 seating capacity and design. Its recent renovations meant that the seating tiers are built for a great view from any angle, and named it after Ellie Caulkins, one of Denver's greatest operatic names. Even though it is set to run until September 2nd and there are nightly performances and matinee shows, the show has already sold out, proving the popularity and draw of the show and its creators.

I've heard that Mormons found this show offensive. I wonder how it will turn out being so close to the Mormon epicenter.
