Why Perform Magic?

Magic has been a source of trickery and entertainment since the Egyptians 5,000 years ago. Since that time, magic has evolved and become more realistic. But at the end of the day we all know it’s just a trick… right? Why do magicians want their audience to believe in what they do? Does it make a magician happy when they know we have been tricked and fooled? Many spectators may think so, I beg to differ…

When you’re watching a magic show, or have been stopped by a street magician so that they could show you a magic trick, we tend to get really excited. Usually, the first thought of hearing magic, is seeing something out of the ordinary that cannot be done in reality. Who wouldn’t want to see something so extraordinary? And then when the magician shows you a trick and completely fools you, you are either one of two things; amazed and entertained, or feeling stupid and want to know how in the world did I fall for that.

What an audience needs to understand is that a magician is not out there to make themselves feel powerful or to make you feel stupid. Magic is an art, science, beauty of nature that is used to entertain people not to deceive. A magician himself knows that magic is not real, and his main goal is not to make you believe that it is. Magicians perform magic to amaze. The feeling a magician gets after completing a magic illusion is incredible. Jaws drop, eyeballs pop, yelling at the top of their lungs are some of the reactions. Imagine doing something that not too many people in this world can do in front of a live audience. They go crazy; they are amazed by what they have just seen. Whether they now believe in magic or not, they are amazed. That’s for sure.

So next time a magician decides to show you a magic trick (which is becoming more often these days) don’t try to reveal his secret or tell him magic doesn’t exist. They already know that. Just sit there (or stand) and enjoy the ride, because depending how good the magician is, you can be very entertained and see something spectacular and memorable. And a little tip for magicians; don't try so hard to make your audience believe in magic. The whole point is to entertain, and get the great feeling when they react to your magic. Its an art, not a trick.
