5 Easy Tips For How to Save Money Every Month

With our economy the way it is today and the need, for many, to get better control over personal spending, it is becoming more important than ever to find ways to save money . . . and what better way than to find ideas on how to save money every month! When you are able to regularly save every month, the savings can add up quickly, and without much effort. Saving does not become something you have to consciously think about, but something that becomes routine and a “good” new habit. To help get people started, I want to pass along 5 easy ways for how to save money every month.

Drop Your Home Telephone Service

My first idea for how to save money every month is to consider dropping your home telephone service. This is something that is becoming more and more popular, especially as people are becoming more mobile and the alternatives are constantly improving. One such new alternative, the new MagicJack Plus, allows you to make free local and long distance calls, free international calls to the U.S and Canada and can now be used with or without a computer. Skype is another option, allowing you to make calls over the Internet. Another alternative, gaining popularity, is using your cell phone as your main number. With all its calling features and ability to utilize plans that let you use unlimited minutes to call certain numbers, people like my brother-in-law and several friends are saving a lot of money each month this way.

Lower the Temperature on Your Water Heater

Another idea for how to save money every month is to lower the temperature of your water heater. Many manufacturers set water heater thermostats to 140 degrees, though most households typically do not need it set above 120 degrees, and some say even 110 degrees is just fine. By lowering the temperature, you can reduce the cost of your energy bills by 3-5% every 10 degrees. As an added benefit, by decreasing the temperature, you can also slow the buildup of mineral deposits and corrosion in your hot water heater and water pipes. For additional savings and to improve its performance, you can also add a water heater blanket for better insulation, especially if it is located outside.

Watch Out For Vampire Energy!

Another great tip for how to save money every month is to unplug or turn off your electronics when they are not being used. You can do this easily if you plug all your devices into a power strip, then simply unplug it, or switch it off when you're done. Otherwise, most of your household appliances and gadgets continue drawing power even when “turned off” (this is often called vampire power, vampire energy, phantom load, standby loss, etc.) and can actually put a sizeable drain on your wallet. While there are many culprits in your home, two of the biggest are your HD cable/sat box and/or HD DVR, as they typically stay on full power 24/7! If you will not need to record a show while you’re out, unplug it or switch off your power strip and the savings may be a nice surprise.

Replace Your Car’s Air Filter

My next tip on how to save money every month is to improve your car’s gas mileage by switching out the air filter. This may seem like something best left to a mechanic, but you can easily do this yourself in a few minutes with little effort. Doing it yourself instead of having them do it for you on your next oil change will save you extra money as well. Changing the air filter on your car is one of the most important and easiest maintenance procedures you can do. You will not only improve your gas mileage, you can help extend the life of the engine and improve overall performance as well.

Try to Cut Back on Your Cell Service

The last tip for how to save money every month is to review your cell phone plan and try to trim what you don’t need. Contact your current cell phone service provider and try eliminating calling features you don’t often use, and reduce your monthly minutes if able. After tracking your cell phone usage over the previous 4-6 months, you may find you are way below the “allowed minutes for your plan. If you have a smartphone, you can look into apps for sending free messages over the Internet vs. sending text messages where you may be charged per text, or on costly texting plans. For instance, using Apple’s new iMessages app, you can send free messages to others on iOS 5 devices (no texting charges). It could result in you saving $5-$10 per month or even more on you bill.

While it may be getting harder everyday for people to make ends meet, you can help your situation by finding ways to trim the excess from your bills. You don’t have to do anything extreme either . . . but just start small and do it regularly and eventually it will become something you can do without much thought or sacrifice. There are many ways to save money every day, but hopefully I gave you 5 easy ways for how to save money every month. By racking up savings each month, your savings will grow quickly.
