Is it really possible that NJ Governor Chris Christie can force a merger between Rutgers University and Rowan? Rutgers University is one of the finest research institutions in the nation and they may soon be facing a merger with Rowan University due to Governor Christie's plan to bring Rutgers resources to the Rowan name. Rowan has mostly been considered a teacher's college in Glassboro, NJ but recently achieved University status. Such a merger would be akin to UCLA merging with Loyola Marymount University but keeping the name of the latter in order to bring a wealth of resources to the much smaller and less prestigious school.
Governor Christie has indicated that the merger will happen despite several public outcries from Rutgers University staff, alumni and students. Governor Christie has stated that both universities should prepare for the merger to begin July 1, 2012 despite the fact that he doesn't have an estimate for the cost of the merger.
A merger between the two universities would bring a medical school and law school to Rowan University but those not in favor of the merger fear that a degree from Rowan will not carry the same weight as one from Rutgers University. Rowan would be elated to merge with such a prestigious school as Rutgers but many would agree that the benefits are not mutual to both schools.
If the two universities merge as Governor Christie plans I feel there will be a sudden decrease in enrollment from interested high school seniors who will look elsewhere to begin their college careers. Students worthy of the Rutgers education and prestige will not want to be associated with Rowan. In state students pay approximately $24,000 per year to attend Rutgers but students will not be near as likely to put out nearly $100,000 to attend "Rowan" for four years.
A forced merger between two universities will likely go down in history as one of the boldest moves in state government history and time will only tell how successful such a merger will actually be. For those who support the merger I hope that it brings you the collegiate fame and career fortune you hope for. Just don't be surprised if years from now you realize that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Those who are against the merger and are associated with Rutgers University will have to ask themselves if they ever thought a state governor had the power to change the institution where they once were proud to earn their degree. Can the name of a university really make a difference in one's career prospects and overall future? I think most people know that a university's name and prestige really do matter and can make a difference in their careers.
Thousands of students from both universities will have extremely high student loans and other related debt after graduating and statistics show that many of these recent college graduates will find themselves unemployed for months. Will some of these struggling grads blame governor Christie for their lack of success after graduation?
Don't blame the state governors for high college tuition in state colleges and universities. College tuition is unfairly high everywhere. Especially when you consider the fact that you can begin a free education online today. An education you can be proud of and an education that shows you how to earn significant earnings immediately. Best of all, you will never need to worry about a state governor decreasing the prestige of your education.... or your earnings.
Thanks Shawn! I appreciate your comments. A work in progress and a work I am passionate about. I'm enjoying your informative articles also. Keep them coming
Interesting approach! Who knows, will Governor Chris Christie force a merger between Rutgers University and Rowan successfully or not. You bring out good points. I suspect it's likely to look like it happens! Given the economic forces at play. Will it get completed? Will it work? Is it fair to say that college tuition is unfairly high everywhere? The world is changing so fast right now that big risks need to be taken to find better solutions. NJ's Governor may well find a different big move within all this that's better and turn in another direction based on what's learned between now and the end of the year. Nice photo commentary...
Thanks Cynthia, it really will be interesting to see the end result...and how successful it all becomes. You are so right that we never know what other twists and turns will follow regarding political decisions affecting so many! I appreciate your comments
Good article Jay must admit I don't know the situation there but have had a lot of reading about Rutgers. Hope it all turns out how the majority would like it to.
Yes, It seems quite shocking that a governor can force such a merger. I just wonder if this is a sign of things to come with other state universities merging and other state run departments being forced to unite. Thanks for the comments Rob!
