A Change Gonna\' Come

Oh, there been times that I thought I couldn't last for long;

But now I think I'm able to carry on;

It's been a long, a long time coming;

But I know a change gonna’ come, oh yes it will.

Recorded by Sam Cooke . . . 1963 . . . Part of a beautiful tune that longs for change and a better life.

Any one of us could sing those words, longingly, hoping for a life change in the midst of our difficult circumstance. So many people these days are finding themselves in the midst of trouble, whether it is unemployment, underemployment, chronic illness, mounting financial obligations, troubled children.

Aging is one of those circumstances that definitely brings challenges to some families. Many persons who are now retiring actually believed that retirement would be their “golden years.” Instead the economy that hurt so many people since 2008 took its toll, and golden years have become times of struggle for many retirees.

The thought we have heard about for so long about elderly citizens having to decide between eating and buying their medications is now all too real for many of us. Health insurance has become hard to hold on to, just at the time when health care is most important.

Have we become a society that does not adequately care for our children and our elderly? And how do we get through days of declining health and financial struggle? There are not too many good answers to such questions, but one answer, though it may be a bit trite, is to take one day at a time.

There’s really no other way to manage it. It is too overwhelming when taken all at once. At least taking one day at a time breaks a struggle into finite chunks of trouble that we can better manage. Here are some practical suggestions:

  • Try to avoid depression by communicating with a friend once in a while, getting out for a short walk, or taking a brief break by reading or watching a favorite television show.
  • Remind yourself that your life may be difficult, but life and hope is always worthwhile.
  • Attend a church or synagogue where you can find spiritual care and support.
  • Let your medical doctor know if you are feeling depressed and take his or her advice to help alleviate depressive days.
  • Try to tell yourself that there is always hope and that change is going to come. You may not see how, but believing in hopeful change can make for a positive difference in your life.
  • Listen to some music that you enjoy and let it lift your spirits in the way only music can do.

Finally, remember again the words of Sam Cooke’s song:

Oh, there been times that I thought I couldn't last for long;

But now I think I'm able to carry on;

It's been a long, a long time coming;

But I know a change gonna’ come, oh yes it will.

Great advice Kathy! Some times I have to take it moment by moment. All these suggestions are good. Thanks!
