Big Reasons to Be Patient

I was waiting in the open lift doors of my building yesterday for my colleague, when I heard someone who was already in the lift chirp up rather indignantly “Come on there’s a lift full of people here.” To which I calmly replied “Thank you, really appreciate you waiting guys.” His comment really got me thinking about my Big reasons to be Patient and about the value of this virtue. It highlights one's true colours to everyone around. “From the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaketh” as they say.

Poor Me!

Being impatient has a way of pushing whatever you deem as priority onto others whether its in their best interests or not. And if something isn’t going the way it was planned, it can entice feelings of victimhood. Which is most unappealing and counter-productive to anyone especially people we have relationships with.

What’s wrong?

Rushing implies that something is wrong or out of order. Whenever we see someone rushing it can cause us to immediately have a physiological reaction and get caught up in their erratic energy. It can be a very robbing experience. Whenever you start to feel this, stop and purposefully cut the mental tie with your thoughts to that situation or person. This will free up your energy again.

Being Present

One can rarely feel the benefit of being in the present moment when there is an undercurrent feeling of impatience. There is always something to be doing or to worry about, instead of just ‘be-ing’ and appreciating the joy of being alive that is available in every moment.

When we hurry it’s like we go into a little tunnel and momentarily lose the ability to see humor and love in the world around us. Depending on how long we stay in that state, determines our overall mood for the most part. Without realising, we can be missing the subtlety of the things that are important in life.

Clarity of Thought

I have had the experience of rushing to get to the shops on time only to discover when getting home that in my state, I had forgotten to buy all the grocery items I needed, which meant my meal plan for the dinner party went out the window. My state had prevented me from being clear about what I had to do. Mistakes can be made when in a hurry.

Grace

I admire people who seem to have all the time in the world. They can go about what they do with such effortless grace. They understand that everything has its time and place and that no one can ever truly miss out on the good things in life. There's time enough for it all.

I acknowledge there are times when rushing is imperative, like in the case of life threatening emergencies, but as a rule it always pays to take a moment and be patient. All things can be considered well when there is a lack of haste.

In my own life I have made it a point to walk calmly and breathe slowly because by not rushing from place to place, it has as a wonderful physical effect on my mind, actually allowing me to get more done efficiently each day. Being peaceful and centered is a great way to live indeed. I hope that you too understand these big reasons for cultivating and possessing patience.

Your stories, comments and feedback always welcome.

I have only relatively recently learnt to actively live at a calm pace. I appreciated your article. It really is a choice. My biggest learning was that it's OK to say 'no' to things that I know will stress me.

Oh I know what you mean. I personally have found it hard to say no in the past, always wanting to be everything to everyone. But then I ran myself silly in the end, crazy in a way huh.

C4rmen, a good article, thoughtful and concise. Is it not a trait of modern living that all things must now be done at pace? The very lives we lead have us rushing around, the days of stopping for a chat, long gone. This I think is the basis of today's lives, the modern technology has made it that way. What the future will hold is thought provoking, like the article I wrote this morning reflecting on modern developments. It is time to stop and reflect on what this is doing to us, mentally physically and health wise. I agree stop, breath and enjoy today, for tomorrow might never happen.

Nice comment Rob, it is a fast pace world out there and the only way I know how to keep up is by stopping and reflecting at times :)
