Real quick, when's the last time you took a serious step in your life without thinking about it first? Stuck? Well you shouldn't be. The moment I asked that question your immediate thought should have been "Never, what kind of fool do you take me for Johnny?!".
Now the reason I ask this is because I've seen many of my friends fall off their "New Year's Resolution" wagon already and we're barely half way through the year. I myself took on some very tough challenges for the year of 2001 and pledged that I would finally become the man I see myself as.
I never planned to be in the position I'm in at age 27. I thought by this day and age I'd be the owner of my own one family home somewhere on Long Island, married, at least one little booger running around, and fully entrenched in my recording engineering career. The problem with that plan however was that I never truly sat down and planned it. I simply had a vision in my mind and thought that by first getting my recording engineering degree all would simply fall into place... it didn't.
Fast forward 5 years and there I was, December 31st, 2010, camera in hand and NO idea what my New Year's Resolution would be. I've never been one to dabble in that sort of stuff anyway but for some reason that very night I decided I needed to make a change. I grabbed my cam and told my Face Book and Twitter friends that I had compiled a list of "Accomplishments" (I avoided the whole "Goals" thing since goals are really a hit or miss) and explained to them that on December 31st, 2011, everything on that list would become a reality.
Now trust me, that was a looong list. A very detailed list for that matter. But that list is still in hand today, and is the very reason I've accomplished a few more things in the first 1/3 of this year then I had in the previous 5. So now, I want to share this idea with you (even though we're already in May, I feel it's a great plan to set up for the last half of the year; July-December).
So here it is, my formula for true change...
First take out a pen and pad, or just a word document, and list 15 things you must get done before the ball drops that brings in 2012. Now don't be shy, aim as high as you want, there's nothing you can't accomplish once it's in writing and staring at you day after day, after day, after day... lol.
Second, look over your list and summarize those 15 or more accomplishments on your list into a clear Vision Statement. For this one you have to be a bit creative and use your imagination. Picture yourself on December 31st, 2011 having accomplish every single thing on that list. Imagine how great you'll feel, the satisfaction that'll completely take over you when all your desires are met. Even better, think of all the happy people in your circle who'll be looking up to you after you've done all this. You'll be more than just Janet the ruler of the planet, you'll be Janet - the one who reached out and grabbed it.
Now, the third and final step. This to me is the most important step since this will be the one that triggers the action-taker inside of you every time you feel like you can't do it, or it's too much to handle, or whatever else your mind will try to trick you into believing. Look over your whole list, read your vision statement, and as you do this a word should pop into your head... GRAB IT! That very word right there is your word. The word that jogs your memory and let's you envision your list and vision statement.
This word is the most powerful trigger for the year. This word will be what make you get up, get out, and get something. I know this all seems like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, but believe me - it gets the job done. I know we've all seen "The Secret" and heard of "The Law of Attraction" (if you haven't then you need to get your hands on "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and FAST).
Seriously, just take a moment to try this. Believe me, you won't be disappointed. Heck, if you just think of a word to motivate you for the rest of the year then half the battle is won. Now go - get it poppin' people!
God bless & Love. Cheers...
Here's the thing Johnny; procrastination is the disease of the century, and it is prevalent because we have failed miserably to properly manage our time and resources. The key here is to put time frames with specific expectations and goals on all the priority items we want to accomplish in this life, the list must be checked of daily, and if we fail we punish ourselves, and if we did it we reward ourselves. Honesty though is the catalyst to survive this exercise, and the world needs a lot more of that.
Have you done the things on your list then? I've read 'Think and Grow Rich' and still am doubtful if I can do it. I have a page of my goals but even though I've already taken action to get there, I'm very far from achieving any. I hope my persistence will pay off one day even though it's way past the date I set for myself. Thanks for the article!
