Colonel Sanders: A Man Who Knew the Meaning Of Not Giving Up

Have any of you ever heard of Colonel Harland Sanders? I’m sure some of you have, but for those of you who haven’t, he was the man who created Kentucky Fried Chicken, a fast food restaurant (now referred to as KFC), that exist all the United States and throughout the globe.

Well, I’m going to talk about how it all started. During the Great Depression Period, Colonel Sanders owned a small family-owned restaurant in the state of Kentucky called “The Sanders Court & Café,” which later on grew into a success. However, in 1956, when Colonel Sanders was 65 years old, an interstate freeway bypass was built over his restaurant. As a result, his restaurant business went on a decline and, later on, he had to auction off his business.

After he sold his operations and having very little savings, he received his first social security check for guess how much? A whopping $105. He became upset when he saw that check, because here’s a man who worked hard all his life, just to receive a skimpy social security check in the very end of his work life at 65. However, for Colonel Sanders, at 65, where most people end their work life, his was just beginning. Now, you’re going to see how this story ties in with him and not giving up; just bear with me. When the Colonel saw his social security check, what did he do?

Does he go out and protest against the government about how they screwed him over? No. Does he go out and complain about how bad of a president we have and how they‘re robbing the people? No. This is what he did. He asked himself a question: “ What is it that I have in my possession that I can sell and make some money off of?” The only thing he could come up with at that time was his secret chicken recipe. Then he says, “You know what? I’m going to travel to restaurants all over the United States and sell this recipe.”

So he gets in his car and leaves his town in Kentucky to travel the United States to visit restaurants he could sell his recipe to. He was going to sell his chicken recipe for free. All he wanted in return was a small percentage of the sales. And you know the outfit Colonel Sanders always were? It was a white suit with a black string tie, and he had a grey goatee (which is not how most men looked and dressed in the 1950‘s). So could you imagine someone showing up in your restaurant dressed like that and saying, “Hey, I have a chicken recipe and I think it might work.” So what did the restaurant owners do? They laughed at the guy. He was shown the door by many restaurants: “Get out of here! Who wants a recipe from a white Santa Claus?” Now, hear this: Not 1, not 100, but over a thousand restaurants rejected his offer. However, after over 1,000 visits to restaurants, on his 1,009 try, one restaurant finally accepted his recipe, and, thus, was born Kentucky Fried Chicken. Now, just look at that for a second. This guy had so much failure, it was ridiculous. Most people would’ve called this guy a douche bag and most people would’ve said, “Look at this guy, just failure after failure after failure.”

In summary, Colonel Sanders, a man who faced so much failure, where most people would’ve given up, kept going. He didn’t let anyone tell him no. Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, the Colonel prevailed when the restaurant finally accepted his offer. Think about. If this man had given up, Kentucky Fried Chicken would not exist in the United States and all over the world. This was a man who knew the meaning of not giving up. He, like a lot of successful men, didn’t let to all the naysayers out there tell him otherwise. He blocked out all that negative talk.

So what is so key about all this? 65 years old when he started! I’ll repeat that: 65 years old! This guy was not super smart by any means, not to mention he was a high school dropout. He knew he wasn’t super successful. But one thing he did have that most people don’t have was drive and ambition. And guess what? All these failures IS what made him successful in the end.

So what I trying to get at with this story is if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything in life, with perseverance and hard work. And always saying to yourself: “I can do it.” No matter what it takes. Then figure out how to do it. So for those of you who happen to be middle aged and beyond, who may have lost their jobs in today’s bad economy, today, in 2012, as I write this, just remember what Colonel Sanders did. So there is still hope for you guys at there who are middle aged or even senior citizens. It’s never too late to start all over.

Nicely done! Yeah! I am in the retirement age and looking to supplement the Social Security check that will soon start coming in. Time to start a new venture. I started in writing articles two months ago. Now I am working on a book! I guess old dogs can learn new tricks!

Thank you, McK! It's good to hear you're supplementing other income streams, especially in today's world, with social security on the verge of bankruptcy. And I agree about the old dog learning new tricks thing. I think the most accurate term for "You can't teach a old dog new tricks" is "You can't a person that clings onto old ideas new tricks, regardless if they're young or old." There are some young people who cling into old ideas and vice versa.
