Don\'t Be A Jackass Whisperer

I saw a great quote today by Brene Brown: “Don't try to win over the haters; you are not a jackass whisperer.”

I had a “laugh-out-loud” moment over that quote, and thought about my own personal haters. I have many of them for some reason, people who just do not like me at all. And I have to admit that in my younger years it used to bother me a great deal.

But their hating doesn’t affect me much anymore. I am aware that life is short and that there are many people to love that I need to concentrate on. Giving away my emotional energy to those who hate me is simply a waste of who I am meant to be.

So I have thought about that some today. What exactly does it do to me to be concerned about those who hate me? I have come up with a few things.

1. Concentrating on the people who hate me makes me wonder if there is something wrong with me, and that can be hurtful to my psyche.

2. Giving too much thought to why some people hate me can make me dislike myself, and that’s not a good thing.

3. Thinking too much about the people who hate me takes away from the love energy I can give to those who care about me and love me back.

4. Trying to figure out why people dislike me actually hurts my soul, and that can’t be good.

So what do I do instead? I can think of some very uplifting things like spending an extra hour with my grandchildren who love me. Here are some additional suggestions:

• Make some special moments with my spouse.

• Have lunch with a good friend.

• Write a letter to someone I have not heard from in a while.

• Visit a nursing home and spend some time giving love to someone who is lonely.

• Write a thank you letter to someone far away from home in the military and let them know I care about them.

• Be a little kinder to the neighborhood children.

• Spend some extra time talking with my neighbors.

• Send a card to someone who is grieving a loss.

• Say “I love you” to someone special each day.

There are so many loving things we can do in this world. Why would we want to spend even a second worrying about those who are our haters?
