I am a senior and I have been around long enough to see a lot of bad and a lot of good in the human spirit. I think the good still out weights the bad. May be it has to do with the area you live in. It's easier to do good in a less crowded area. There is good every where, but in a crowded, fast paced area, it is not noticed as often.
The idea was brought to my attention while I was watching a shark attack on television. The shark had a boys' leg in its' mouth up to the thigh. He wouldn't let go. The boy finally drug the shark up into the shallows and the shark was still holding fast to the boys' leg.
Four men came to the bleeding boys aid. They readily risked their own lives to help this stranger, this boy. They finally saved his'life, if not the leg. It really takes a special kinda person to help with out thought for his own safety.
Last month during the movie shooting, two or three men threw themselves on their girlfriends to shield them from being shot. A mother did the same for her child. It makes me very proud to live when there are still people who automatically do such heroic things.
I think we need to dwell on the great things people do and not the sick, mean spirited acts they do. I bet if you had a mind to, you could find a good deed for every bad one.."There is no greater love than to give up your life for another"
This article is not about the first responders or the armed services who give their lives for us, for we adore them. They are in another group of wonderful people. No one is better! I am speaking out for the everyday Joes who do not necessarily have any training in lifesaving or rescue .It's about people that see something needing to be done, and go help. There are just some people who know what to do and do it. This is a great gift to the rescuer and the receiver. No one knows what you would do if this kind of thing happened. Would you freeze...would you pass out? You don't know until it happenes. My husband does what 's needed without thought. He takes care of the situation until medical help arrives. He then goes off and throws up. He will be a mess when the trouble is over, but when he's needed he is there.
This is powerful stuff here.
I guess that's it for now. See you again?
You're right, the human spirit is about helping one another. Regularly and in emergency situations, that willingness to do a good deed for a stranger or for someone you know is what makes a difference in the world. Delighted you've got a wonderful husband! Good article.
I really can't thank you enough for the encouragement in this endever, Thanks Shawn
I have had people help me in accidents where they risked their own safety and I am one that will jump in as well. You are right, we should dwell on the good in people but it's hard not to react to the bad. I will take your advise and try to find one good for every bad when I am exposed to an inordinate amount of the bad things we learn about daily.
