How to Improve Confidence In 3 Easy Steps

Confidence affects not only the way we feel and the way others see us, it also affects our decisions, so learning how to improve confidence can change your life by changing your choices. Confident people are more likely to make decisions that benefit them, than those who lack confidence, they’re more likely to influence the actions of others, and they’re of course more likely to achieve goals.

So, how to improve confidence? Well, the first thing to realize and accept is that no one else can give you confidence. Only you can do that. There are three steps you can take today that will start to improve your confidence. Like anything, it takes practice but it works like magic. The third step is the most powerful, but it's very effective to use all three of these together.

How to Improve Confidence, Step-by-Step

Step 1: On one piece of paper, make a list of what you think are your best qualities. On another, make a list of what you think are your worst qualities. Read through the list of worst qualities and then either burn it or tear it up and throw it away. Turn your focus to the list of good qualities and expand on each one. Describe why you think each quality is a good one. Go into as much detail as you can. You may only be able to think of one or two good qualities - and that's okay. Add more as the days go on. If you can't think of any, make some up. Think of two qualities you'd like to have and describe in detail (as if you already have them) why those qualities are so good in you.

Then put that piece of paper somewhere where you will see it every morning – stick it to your mirror, or the back of the bathroom door, or put it in your cutlery drawer so you see it when you get a spoon out for your cereal. Or you could put it in your underwear drawer, your shoe – somewhere where you will come across it each morning; and when you do, read it through at least once, preferably a few times a day. This exercise on its own may not be effective in how to improve confidence, but combined with the two steps below, it is very powerful.

Step 2: Smile. I know it seems simple, but a smile is an automatic tool for how to improve confidence. When you’re on your own, even when – no, especially when – you don’t feel like smiling. Try just smiling anyway. Try it right now. Just turn up the corners of your mouth. This is not an “airy-fairy” thing – it’s a chemical thing. The physical action of smiling sends a message to the brain to release “feel good” chemicals – and feeling good is a key to how to improve confidence. When you’re feeling worried, nervous or anxious, try smiling – even though you don’t feel like it. And see what happens! :)

Step 3: Every morning, with your morning coffee or tea, go to YouTube and find a video that makes you laugh out loud. It can be anything – a scene from your favourite sit-com or movie, or an excerpt from a stand-up routine, bloopers, or a funny home video. Find something that makes you laugh from the inside. And allow yourself to laugh and enjoy it. Then, when you meet up with people during the day, tell them about it (only if you’re comfortable doing so – don’t force yourself) – it will not only give you something fun to talk about, but it will also bring back the memory of how funny you found it, which will release endorphins in your brain, making you feel good and…. more confident! :) Throughout the day, think back to that video, it will help to give you regular “shots” of feeling good, which is the most effective way of how to improve confidence! And of course, improving confidence - especially with this exercise - helps to improve communication skills too!

Most of us believe that when we feel confident, we’ll feel good, and this is true; but it works the other way too! When we feel good, we feel more confident. Of course, it’s not always easy to make ourselves feel good on cue – especially if we’re insecure, worried or anxious. Laughter is the most powerful tool for cutting through almost anything, and the internet means we have instant access to laughter. Spending just a few minutes each morning before you start your day, watching something that makes you laugh, will not only get you off to a good start for the day, it will give you a “button” to press throughout your day for “instant feel good”. I hope these three exercises have answered your question of how to improve confidence - and you’ll find that the more you do this, the easier and more effective it becomes.

Hey Debby, I loved point number 3. Didn't think of doing that at all. Mornings were always 'Ah, gotta get up for work' and start thinking of all the things I have to do then have to push myself out. Never thought actually to utilize the morning to watch something to get me to laugh... will try it and let you know how it goes... THX!

When I went to work outside the home, I was always in a rush in the mornings. I can watch a funny video the night before and remember it during the day. I posted something funny on Facebook recently about my diet.
