How to Overcome Fear Of Failure  -  The Procrastination Link

You are a habitual procrastinator. You procrastinate on many occasions especially on important tasks. Often you know the bad consequences of putting off an important task. Not that you have not tried to do it, you have - a few times - but every time there’s always something else to do that seems more urgent or important. You imagine a few catastrophic consequences should you fail, each one seems to be more horrible than the one before as your imagination runs wild. Obviously this is is not the first time you procrastinate, it has happened over and over again. Most of the time however, you do make it through but the results are not up to the standard you know you are capable of. You usually self justify by telling yourself (and others) many reasons why you procrastinate that in turn caused the less than stellar results.

Does this sound familiar? Is procrastination a constant in your life?

There are many root causes of procrastination. Here I will share about one cause that I have personal experience with – Fear of Failure. As a sufferer myself, I had gone through the above scenario. I tried many techniques to overcome my procrastination but only after I found out that I had fear of failure that real change came about.

Fear of failure is defined as negative emotions associated with actual failure or most of the time possibility of failure. Sufferers have a high tendency to delay or even avoid doing an important task because they fear that they will fail in the said task. Why?

Fear of failure sufferers uses procrastination as a coping mechanism. They want to eliminate or minimize what they anticipate to be the consequences of their failure. By doing work at the very last minute or in worse cases not doing it at all, they will give themselves possible excuses.

As portrayed at the beginning of this article, in a sufferer mind, if he fails to deliver or falls short of his own (or others) expectations, he now has excuses, thanks to procrastination. Very often, these reasons or excuses are not his fault. Instead he always blames others or external factors for the shortcomings. To a sufferer he himself didn’t really fail, it’s those external factors that caused the failure. This helps him to avoid the negative emotions he associates with failure.

By learning how to overcome fear of failure, you can eliminate one of the causes of procrastination. It is also beneficial to learn the many symptoms of fear of failure and determine whether fear of failure is affecting your life.
