I Hate My Job: Coping Skills If You Need to Stay In A Job You Cant Stand

Not everyone has the luxury of jumping out of bed, whistling at their reflection in the mirror and dancing a wee jig as they head to their car on a work day. In fact, those people are probably a very rare breed and it might be a sign of impending doom if you suddenly notice that behavior. For most people, work is just that: work. It is where you drag yourself for the day, put in your time and then scurry out of at the end of the day, all in the pursuit of a paycheck, nothing more or less.

For other people, it is a matter that is much more serious. Those people literally hate their jobs to the point of cringing when it is time for them to get ready to go. They may have more sick days because they feel physical illness that is directly caused by their psychological problems. Hating your job used to be a signal that it is time to move on, to find a new job, but the reality these days is that it is not always so easy to change jobs, especially to walk away from the security of a position just because you are unhappy. Reality is keeping many people from making changes in their lives, even though they are desperately unhappy in their current position.

Psychologists have long worked toward answering the question of whether it is unhappiness with a job that causes depression or whether depression causes the job unhappiness. No matter which comes first, the two factors can greatly impact one another. But, it is not just depression that can lead to these problems. Other mental health disorders can impact job satisfaction as well.

The first step in coping with a job that you are less than happy with is to determine what part of it you are least happy with and what, if any, you do like. If you find that you are not happy with the hours or the days that you work, speak to a supervisor about potentially changing your schedule. If it is a coworker that is causing you the most grief, try to identify why they bother you so much.

The next step is to ask if you are unhappy with your job because it doesn't set with what you had planned for your life. If you are interested in moving up in the company, consider seeking additional education that will allow you to do so. You can find part time training and schools that can work around your schedule.

Finally, if you are unhappy with the type of work that you do, you might need to take the steps to change jobs, saving up money and looking for other positions while you are continuing to show up every day.
