Life\'s Important Rules

A wise person has said that there are seven cardinal rules in life. The first one is to make peace with your past, so that dealing with your past doesn’t spoil your present life. It’s a good rule, the past cannot be changed. But it can be relegated to its proper place. One learns from it, grows from it, perhaps is saddened by it. But the past must be left in the past so that we can live life in the present with the joys of today. Remember that the sorrows and regrets of the past have the power to steal your present joys unless you can leave the past to the former days and live in this day.

The second rule is this: “What other people think of you is none of your business.” The reality is that we cannot change what others think of us, and letting what they think bother us is counterproductive in life.

Rule number three is that “time heals everything if we can give things enough time.” The most hurtful experience may not go away completely, but the wound does heal with time. We just have to be patient with the healing process.

“Don’t compare your life to the lives of others” is rule number four. It’s a useful rule considering that we don’t really know about anyone’s life or what they might be dealing with. From the outside, it may seem that all is well with another person, but their situation might be as bad, or even worse, than our own.

Rule number five counsels us to stop thinking too much. In other words, don’t stress over decisions and answers to problems. The stress of thinking too much might even keep us from being able to get the answers we need. If we can relax, perhaps the right answers will come to us when we lease expect them.

“No one is in charge of your happiness except you” is rule number six. And it is all too true. No other person can make us unhappy unless we allow it. When we take charge of our own happiness, we will likely find the happiness we want so deeply.

Finally, rule number seven says “Smile. You do not own all the problems in the world.” It’s good to know, because when we take on the problems of the world, we overwhelm ourselves and seldom solve any of them.
