Limitations Of A Self Help Guru
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

When we learn great self help techniques they are only as useful as the amount we use them. Leaving these tools in our internal toolbox is like buying a new car and leaving it in the garage.

I like the adage; “Use it or lose it!”

People who have embarked on the journey of self-discovery often have a ‘tool’ of choice. Something that has been really helpful in the past and we know it will continue to be in the future.

Many people find benefit from affirmations, self-hypnosis, meditation, and any type of technique for emotional release they may have learnt while reading or at a course.

Personally, I love my Time Line Therapy (TM) best of all - and yet my favourite practitioners use kineseology and reiki.

Wonderfully there is opportunity to learn about many different healing topics and modalities such as chakras, flower essences or homeopathy that can translate to useful home remedies without a great deal of experience and training.

We can all become competent self-help gurus.

When it’s our own ‘stuff’, however, it does us well to remember our limitations. Our head is so far into the problem that it’s impossible to see whole picture. Regardless of how skilled a practitioner is, when using their skills for others, it will be very difficult to help themself on a deeper level.

There is a quote I particularly like; “Man cannot long be his own therapist before enforcing his own delusions”. The quote may be slightly paraphrased (and I don’t remember who I should credit this wisdom to) but it has remained with me for years.

It is also not ideal to work with family members.

My husband has the same training as myself. It helps greatly in our relationship, as we understand where each other are coming from. We can offer insight and guidance as we bounce ideas between us and even facilitate hypnotherapy or other NLP based activities.

The problem is, though, that when people are closely linked there is a strong energetic connection. If one of us has a problem it is likely that the other person is part of the problem.

I’m not so open to taking advice and can misinterpret insight as criticism or opinion. In this type of relationship it’s easy to rebel against suggestions that would be helpful coming from a third party.

When it comes to balancing the body and releasing bigger “stuff” it’s advisable to get qualified advice from someone you’re comfortable with. It makes sense on an emotional level when we look for an appropriate practitioner to guide us through life’s upsets.

Most of all keep an open mind and enjoy the journey. The very core of all these things is to increase wholeness and wellness. It’s a worthy path.

Love this article and your perspective on this. It is true that taking advice from those closest to you can be the hardest part. We need to remember, those that love us only have our best interests at heart!

Thanks AJ. Appreciate your feedback. This is another article that wouldn't have been published if the 30 in 30 wasn't pushing me so it's fun to hear others enjoying it! Bemusing... but fun!

Heather, do you do tapping? I've recently discovered EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). I have no opinions about it yet, except that it is supposed to be a very powerful way to weed out deep resistance to your own well being. You can even cure illnesses with it. Fascinating.

I've heard of tapping too Joan but have no personal experience with it. I think there's something to be benefited from with all these things. Opportunities arise and I've tried many different modalities from chinese herbs to massage to kineseology. It seems to me that different people are attracted to different modalities. I'm not sure why this is but perhaps the unconscious mind knows which vehicle the conscious mind will be most open to using?? I don't have a great interest in EFT (personally) although I do have a respect. Likely it's just because I have my own tools already that fit me well and I just haven't had the opportunity arise to learn more.
