Self Help Part 1

I have been faced with many challenges in my life: abusive childhood, two abusive marriages and many other abusive relationships, raising a child on my own, worked multiple jobs to support myself and my son, many health problems (I have had every non-essential organ removed) and most recently being in a high stress job where I felt over worked and under appreciated. I was stressed and depressed (not a good combination). I didn't like the negative person I had become and finally decided it was time to really work on ME.

I know my story isn't unique; we all face multiple challenges in our lives. The difficulty arises in how we deal with these challenges and how we allow this to affect our future. I didn't know how to effectively deal with my issues or where to get help. I have made minor steps throughout the years but always seemed to be holding myself back from true happiness and success. We all have "baggage" from the past and that baggage can get very heavy to carry. The good news is "You don't have to carry it forever!"

An unhealthy mind can be caused by many things: abuse, money worries, stress, a relationship break-up, a job we dislike, the way we were raised, etc. This can affect our life in many ways…depression, physical ailments, low self-esteem, panic attacks just to name a few.

The first step to a happier life is to get help. What works for some people doesn't work for everyone so you will need to figure out what course of action is best for you...some sort of action is a must. This is the first of several articles that explain some of the things I have found helpful in my endeavour to “battle my demons”

Whether you need a little help or a lot, the time to start is NOW. Yes some of it is going to cost money but aren't you worth it? If you are hesitating to spend money on self-improvement, then you have some LIMITING BELIEFS about money (most of which you learned as a child and are in your subconscious). I was there too but now I consider it an investment in my future. Find something that inspires you and go for it.

Some of the most important lessons I have learned:

- Have patience with YOURSELF.

- Give yourself permission to LOVE AND RESPECT YOURSELF! When you can accomplish that, it will be much easier to love and respect others.

- Faith - everything happens for your highest good.

- Gratitude - be grateful for what you have instead of always thinking about what you don't have. By being grateful for what you currently have, you will attract more good things to you. Avoid the I'll be grateful when...syndrome.

- Monitor and change (as necessary) your thought habits. Eliminate words like "I hate...", "I can't...", "I have to...".

- Forgiveness - forgive everyone and especially forgive yourself!

- Work on clearing the negative beliefs.

Upcoming articles will explain the resources used to learn the above lessons.

In the mean time just remember: If you are treed by a lion, stop to enjoy the view! - Unknown

I agree with you. When people find out they have trouble coping, they need to find a way to get that help. Being patient with myself is more easily said than done. I became more patient by telling myself God loves me as I am. I also tell myself failures can be lessons, and mistakes can be reversed.
