Strategies for Tackling Big Fears And Little Fears

I’m fascinated by the different fears that people have and the way in which they try to control, confront, manage or ignore them. In the UK the little fears and big fears of a handful of celebrities have been the talk of TV and twitter gossip over the past few weeks as the reality ITV programme I'’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' has been on our screens.

Now personally I’m not a fan of the programme. I don’t know why anyone would want to take part (except of course for the money and the opportunity to raise ones profile in celebrity la la land) or why anyone would want to watch (apart from seeing a smug celebrity being frightened out of their wits in a range of stomach churning activities), but plenty of people do.

It’s actually the revolting activities that stop me from watching the programme for more than about ten minutes at a time. But what does interest me is the variety of fears that the different celebrities display.

  • Fear of making a fool of oneself
  • Fear of not being liked
  • Fear of not winning
  • Fear of breaking down
  • Fear of not being heard
  • Fear of being seen as stupid
  • Fear of not coping
  • Fear of saying the wrong thing
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of bugs
  • Fear of the dark
  • Fear of annoying other people
  • Fear of not being seen part of a team
  • Fear of ‘cliques’
  • Fear of looking bad
  • Fear of competition
  • Fear of unfamiliar ‘food’
  • Fear of hunger
  • Fear of showing the ‘real’ you

I wonder how many of these fears resonate with you. These are fairly typical ‘fears’ that you may have experienced albeit, in different contexts and not in front of a television camera.

Some of them may appear to be big fears and others quite small, but ‘size’ doesn’t really matter as our individual experiences and feelings will determine how scary something is.

The real point is how you choose to deal with different fears. There are a number of different strategies you could adopt including:

  • Ignore them because they’re not really that important or don’t have a significant impact on your life.
  • Ignore them and run the risk of a small fear growing into something quite large.
  • Avoid them altogether by not putting yourself in the position where they have to be confronted
  • Take a risk and expose yourself to your fears bit by bit – increasing the exposure each time.
  • Confront them head on and run the risk of not being able to cope with them
  • Retrain your thinking to make a fear appear less scary
  • Embrace your fears and take specific steps to tackle them effectively.

Is there a right way or a wrong way to deal with fears? Not really. The strategies you choose and the steps you put in place to tackle your fears will vary depending on the circumstances and how committed you are to tackling them. There's an element of risk in any strategy you use - even if you choose to ignore them altogether. What's important is that you find a method and take steps to manage them in a way that works for you.

What strategies do you use to tackle your big fears and little fears?
