The Dangers Of Self Delusion

I have a friend who’s nearly 60. She’s very attractive, clever, spikey and great company. She really only has one irritating habit. She likes to say that she looks 41. She doesn’t just say it – she actually believes it. Now although she looks younger than she is and she always looks fabulous, at best she looks in her early 50s. It’s complete self delusion on her part to think she looks so much younger. However she’s not alone. Lots of people kid themselves about different things in their life without ever considering the dangers of self delusion.

In the case of my friend it probably doesn’t do much harm and her attitude certainly doesn’t hurt anyone else, but that’s not always the case. Here are some of the issues that arise from deluding yourself.

Keeps you stuck

How many times have you put off doing something because you say you haven’t enough time? This is so rarely true. The easy solution is to examine your priorities, see if you need to use what time you do have differently or more efficiently and make different choices. It may sound glib and you may be saying to yourself it’s not that easy, but it is. By not being honest with yourself you will stay stuck whether it’s about time management, losing weight, sorting out a poor relationship, hunting for a new job... and so on.

Can harm relationships

Self delusion can damage relationships in either your personal or professional life. Make sure that you see relationships for what they are not what you would like them to be.

Damages your self esteem

Although you may choose to kid yourself to build your self esteem it’s a poor strategy to adopt because in the long term you don’t get the boost to your confidence that you’re looking for. Also you can land up feeling foolish if other people don’t share your delusion. If you need to boost your self-esteem be honest with yourself and focus on what you already have and areas you want to work on.

Gives you unrealistic expectations

Even if you only kid yourself about small things the effect can be to give you unrealistic expectations which when not met can make you unhappy. We’ve all seen music programmes such as the X Factor which showcases many talented people. It also showcases some people who believe they can sing when they clear can’t. It’s painful to watch. It’s good to have dreams and goals to aim for, but if they’re wrapped up in self delusion it’s a poor thing.

Damages your chances of success

If you’re dreaming of success in any area of your life then you need to have a clear idea of what that looks like and how you’re going to achieve it. Self delusion will stop you from turning your dreams into goals and goals into actions. Don’t do it!

Do you ever waste time deluding yourself?

Street Talk

Accepting reality is important! Positive thinking can help you eliminate negative self talk, and guide you to do the best you can with what you've got, yet it's critically important to be grounded in reality.

A really good point you raise here. It can be so easy to get deluded about certain things. I guess thats why we have friends and family around us to help keep us grounded.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. You're right. It's good to have family and friends around to help us keep grounded, though in my experience some can feed the delusion rather than quashing it.
