Think Your Way To Weight Loss

Lose Weight Logically

Fairly often you will hear the phrase critical thinking or critical reasoning thrown around, usually in reference to education or intelligence, or lack of. What exactly is critical thinking and reasoning and what is its value?

The best and shortest explanation is the ability to deconstruct an argument and evaluate it as objectively and throughly as possible. The three main components of an argument are the evidence, conclusion and the assumption. Not only do you need knowledge and intelligence, but good and varied sources of information.

While no one is completely and truly objective because of the life experiences that have ingrained certain beliefs and habits into us, it is possible to get close if you value truth and honesty.

The amazing thing about using critical thinking or reasoning is that it can be applied to anything. Going back in history and learning the facts and small steps that lead to certain important and altering events can not only be interesting, but educational for forming opinions and ideas in the present. Even in daily life it can be useful in working out dilemmas of all sorts.

The problem most people have in applying critical thinking isn’t breaking down the argument into its different parts or even getting a varied source of quality information. The main problem is putting aside biases and really taking a hard honest look at an issue. Like I said earlier it can be done, but takes effort.

Reason Your Way To a Healthy Lifestyle

Lets look at a topic probably not usually associated with critical thinking and reasoning. Weight loss.

Now I know every day someone is offering the newest, best way to drop them pounds, and quick! But we all know that losing weight takes effort, sweat and time.

A basic breakdown of the weight loss argument would go like this: that x amount of exercise and x amount of healthy eating (argument) will result in weight loss and a healthier lifestyle (conclusion). Articles and opinions from reliable sources and personal testimonials would be evidence.

Basically this is true for all of the population; weight loss in theory is really not that difficult. It’s in the practice that it gets hard and people's biases get in the way.

Think of it this way, yes we all have different likes in food, but the amount and variety of food is enormous. Same with exercise, the methods and types are quite varied, but there really is something for everybody.

Reliable information is actually quite easy also, because the weight loss industry is huge and everybody knows somebody who exercises or eats healthy.

For weight loss, the industry is so big and competitive that anybody that has been around for a while probably is pretty reliable and also easy to check up on with google or the Better Business Bureau. Jillian Michaels is a prime example of this. She was on the show the Biggest loser for a few years and was very successful. In this day and age there is nothing like seeing and believing. In a way her show was kind of like the old adage of try before you buy. There are others like Denise Austin or with food, Atkins and Weight Watchers. The point being you can tell by their longevity that they have something that’s working or can be checked up on easily.

So, you’ve broken down the basic weight loss argument, what now?

Find a eating plan that suits you, not a diet, but a long term change in the way you eat.

Find an exercise(s) that fits your lifestyle, ability and aptitude.

Read up on as much nutritional and exercise info as you can, and gravitate towards the professionals that have been around for awhile, you could learn something from many of them. Don’t forget personal references, first hand knowledge and experience is gold.

Now you have the facts, like any good critical thinker you need to put them into action and not let your excuses and biases get in the way. Breaking it all down and digesting the info is a different way to look at weight loss. Realize all of your excuses are just getting in the way, so put them aside and find a healthy lifestyle plan just for you.

It does take long term change in the way you eat, doesn't it? Move more, eat less, and make a habit of these one day at a time.

Nice read and good points. Come at it from a foundational perspective, and develop real habits that will be lifestyle shifts, instead of brief windows of goal driven activity. Thanks!
