Volunteering for Seniors

Being in my mid-70's, I keep thinking of ways to stay young. Being a realist, this will never happen. I am growing older and nothing I do can stop that. However, I can practice many ways to think young and act young and therefore feel young.

One of the many ways to keep that youthful feeling in my mind is by volunteering. Think of the benefits. You are around people, you are doing something useful, you get satisfaction from what you are doing and you do not have time to concentrate on your own problems, In fact, you often see people less fortunate than you and you can be thankful for that.

Before I started to do research on volunteering, I had specific jobs in mind. Then I discovered so many more ideas, some that I had never heard. For instance, I learned about the Senior Corps. It's been around since Kennedy was president. It includes foster grandparenting, senior companions, and RSVP. There is so much to this that it deserves another article to do justice with it.

I also encountered SCORE the Service Corps of Retired Executives. I was aware of this because we had used their services when my son and I had a plumbing business.

What I want to concentrate on today are all local ways to make yourself useful.

COMMUNITY MEALS

So many churches in my area offer free meals to people having a hard time putting food on their table. There is some place people can go every night of the week for a free meal. You can offer your services in acquisition of food, food preparation, serving, setting up tables and cleaning up.

HOSPITALS

Hospitals are always looking for volunteers. They have transportation services, getting patients to and from places like X-ray, rehab and discharge. They need people to run gift shops.

RESALE SHOPS

Many organizations like cancer centers and homeless shelters have resale shops that need people to run them. Usually, you are asked to work one or two days a week.

TUTORING

Usually inner city schools or churches have a tutoring program for students that are not doing well in their schoolwork. This only requires on or two nights a week during the school year to help students with their homework. This one on one learning concept is extremely helpful.

Whenever I volunteer, I feel so good, because I have done something for which I was needed. I get more out of volunteering than I put into it. Seniors, get with it. Do something for others - and you will be doing more for yourself.
