We All Have Choices

Frankly, I get very tired and irritated when I hear, “I didn’t have a choice”. We all have choices. Every day when we wake up, we have choices what we are going to wear that day, what we are going to eat, how we are going to treat others, what mood we are going to be in, etc. We may not always like the choices presented to us, but they are still choices. No one else is in control of your thoughts, emotions, speech, or actions. You are the sole pilot of you.

No one can make you feel a certain way or behave a certain way. We have all heard people say, “he/she made me so mad” or “I couldn’t help it, he/she made me do it”. Really? That’s an acceptable excuse? I don’t think so. No one controls your voice. No one controls what you do. No one controls your emotions.

Why do people feel the need to blame someone else for their actions, emotions, feelings, attitude, motivation, etc.? Because, it’s an easy way out. Placing blame on someone else is a cop-out should something go awry. It’s always easier, or so people think, to place all of the responsibility and blame on someone else’s shoulders should something not work out.

Taking responsibility in all aspects of your life can be quite scary. It means that you might fail at something and you will have to acknowledge and admit you made a mistake or that you were wrong. But it can also be very liberating. When you take responsibility for your thoughts, actions, behaviors, and emotions, you open yourself up for enlightenment, understanding, and empathy.

It is very empowering when you start to change the way you view your world and the world around you. When you start to acknowledge that you have the power to change your emotions, thoughts, behavior, and actions, you will start to see the rewarding benefits. When you stop placing blame and start taking responsibility, you will begin to notice a shift in your surroundings. You will be presented with better choices and therefore will start to make better decisions.

We are human, and will still make mistakes, however, when we acknowledge that we made the mistake and accept responsibility and take control of how we respond to the situation, we will have a much better outcome that if we blame someone else.

How great is it to know that we have this power within each and every one of us. We can make a decision every single time a choice that is presented to us; whether it is how we respond to an angry coworker to what we eat for dinner. No one can take that freedom away from us.
