How Do Thieves Steal Your Identity?

Methods used by identity thieves can be categorized into two types. Identity thieves employ Internet dependent techniques and traditional physical methods.

Traditional physical methods

Most of us are careful when it comes to the safeguarding of our identities and personal property but criminals have developed other methods for stealing documents and other valuable information. The methods are:

• Computer and backup theft is the most common method employed. We all know equipment can be stolen from private buildings but criminals can also steal information from hotels, public transportation offices and recreation places. Identity thieves have shown themselves to be capable of carefully analyzing the stolen equipment, and with enough time they can also recover deleted date.

• People who are work in close proximity to you or are closely associated like your babysitter, house cleaner or roommates can get legitimate access to your business or residence for stealing the required information.

• “Dumpster Diving” means going through your trash and garbage bins. Identity thieves in order to attain their goal retrieve documents from trash bins for information and clues. This practice is a lot more common than you might realize.

• Wallets and purses are also stolen by identity thieves because most people store their bank cards and identity documents in them. This is often done by pickpocketing. Pickpockets roam on the streets as well as in exercise rooms and different modes of public transport.

• Stealing your mail or rerouting it is one of the easiest and best ways of getting the necessary information required. Identity thieves can steal your bank mail which includes account statements and credit cards and administrative forms. For an identity thief these documents are priceless. By using your name criminals could request a change of address and then your new credit card might be delivered to them instead.

Internet related techniques employed by identity thieves

• Identity thieves and cyber criminals use fraudulent websites and email (called mirror sites) that are an exact copy of online retail or bank sites. The purpose of this is to fool users into entering their personal information, particularly their account numbers, credit card numbers and passwords.

• Password stealers and key-loggers are malicious programs that are installed in the computers of the intended victims. These programs can record usernames, passwords and other confidential and personal information. After recording all of the necessary information the program sends the data to the ones who installed it.

Whilst the threat is very real and it is important to understand the risks, regular credit score tracking and insurance can esure you are taking the approriate steps to protect yourself.
