Types Of Identity Theft

Identity theft is often associated with stealing someone’s credit card information. However, this is just one part of it because identity theft encompasses other kinds of activity too. There are 5 known types of this form of crime and they are classified as character or criminal, credit, government based tracking number (SSN in US and Insurance no in UK), driver's license and medical theft.

• Character or Criminal

Character theft happens when someone disguises and uses your name, commits a crime and as a result you become the guilty person. This is the biggest damage when your identity is stolen. You will be taken to the police station and interrogated for crimes that someone else committed. This is a very shocking incident and would require that you obtain the services of a lawyer experienced with identity restoration.

• Credit ID Theft

This happens when another person uses your personal information to obtain credit such as loans and credit card purchases. You will be charged with the bill and collection agents will be pursuing you. One common instance of such a theft is when your credit card is used directly for a wrongful purchase. When your credit card is swiped in an out-of-sight location, there could be possibility that the information in the card is taken. The information will be used for purchases and you will be billed.

• Government based tracking number Theft

This is a scenario when someone successfully steals your government based tracking number (SSN in US and Insurance no in UK) and uses your name for various perks and benefits. For instance, if someone gets employed using your tracking number, his or her employer will report your earnings to IRS leaving you liable for the taxes. This can also cause you to lose some government provided benefits.

• Driver's License Theft

When a person is arrested for a traffic related violation and he or she gives your name to the arresting officer, you are liable for the crime. You can be subpoenaed to appear in court or you can be issued warrant of arrest.

• Medical Identity Theft

This happens when the criminal uses your name to obtain medical treatment or medical insurance. You can later be denied health coverage or you can lose your current or existing health insurance coverage in such a situation. Furthermore, you will have false information in your medical records.

All types of identity theft crimes are dangerous for the victim. Nowadays, many ID theft insurances are provided to people to protect them against the repercussions of such incidents. It is also recommended that you undertake regular credit reporting so that you can keep an eye on why your information is being accessed.
