Intriguing title? That will probably caught your attention by now. However do not be surprised - for those who are always in tuned with news thru television, newspaper, and other resources had known what harm this gadget can bring. Unless of course if you are the type of person who listen or read news just for the sake of filling out your daily routine then you would not mind. Who would have imagine that our beloved gadget - smartphone can take your life away? I am not referring to cancer and impotency risk here as what probably some of you might be thinking, my main focus of discussion would be an extreme one which is Sudden Death. Highlights is on the the first and second position most common accidental deaths:
Vehicular Accidents
This one consistently stays on the top spot. According to studies conducted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2009, there were about 5,474 killed in the United States because of distracted driving, 995 of those involved cellphone use. It has also been mentioned that talking on a phone and texting while driving are about 6 times to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated. I know you`re asking yourself now that those data were pretty obsolete - but my point here is with the smartphone capability to do more than just texting and calling those numbers will likely increase. Following "tweets", blackberry "messaging", Facebook "likes" - these so called "mobile socializing" and other applications and games smartphone activities poses a greater threat behind the wheels..
Stairs Accidents
In every step there is danger, right? Some of us might make a laugh on this one but in actuality this ranks second on the most common accidental death with 12,000 deaths per year, 19% has been occupied by cellphone use. Take note that the actual count might be even more larger. Most stairs incidents are not reported because there are those people who got injured does not know how or why they fell. Some victims also are just too embarrassed to tell anyone they fell, I understand...
Going up or going down the stairs and driving requires full attention. So the solution to totally stop vehicular and stair accidents caused by smartphone?
Prohibit yourself from using your phone while engaged in these activities. Well if you are pretty stubborn and really needs to attend an urgent call or emails then use bluetooth headsets, exception to those who live in a country that does not permit handsfree device - or download an applications that will function as an automatic responder.
Yes we will never know to when death will strike, but that is never a good reason to put yourself in a situation where death lurks. Stay focus and be alert on your surroundings - disregard this simple advise then next time you will be seeing grim reaper in your facebook friends list, following your tweets, and or maybe playing angry birds beside you...
