Ereader Comparisons - Kindle vs Nook All New Release - Which One Now?

If you are interested in ereader comparisons you will know that Barnes and Noble released the all new Nook in June 2011 making ereader comparisons of Amazon Kindle vs Nook that much harder. Before the release if you asked me which ereader to buy, unless EPUB file formats were important to you, I would have said Kindle 3 but now ereader comparisons of Kindle vs Nook are much tougher - read on to find out why.

The all new Nook has really put up a challenge for Amazon Kindle, it is lighter, smaller and maybe the battery lasts longer. I say maybe because ereader comparisons of battery life have been a hot issue with some claiming that Barnes and Noble are not making a fair claim when they say the all new Nook battery life is two months. Why because this is not continuous running time - but heck I think the point on battery life for Kindle vs Nook is that they both have a good long life between charges, so long as you don't use the WiFi or 3G a lot, so that is not the main criteria for consideration of Kindle vs Nook.

If you already have an ereader and it is Amazon Kindle then the platform is a consideration as you will know that Amazon Kindle uses different file formats including AZW, DOC and TXT while Barnes and Noble Nook uses the open source EPUB file format. It must be mentioned that Amazon has said they are working on getting EPUB on Kindle. So for established Kindle users, changing from Kindle to Nook may not look attractive but for new users considering Kindle vs Nook, assuming you are based in the USA, the main selection criteria is probably where you plan to buy most of your books.

My ereader comparisons of Kindle vs Nook would not be complete without engaging in discussion of the navigation system for each. Kindle 3 still uses a keyboard under the main 6 inch screen while the all new Nook is all touch. Many consider that the new integrated touch screen is the overriding selling point of the new Nook. It has even been referred to as 'granny friendly' a term some grannies may rather object to given that there are plenty of grannies who are very tech savvy (and what about grandpa!). Anyway I digress the main message is that the all new Nook has a much simplified and user friendly touch screen navigation systems combined with a minimum of buttons for easy page turns.

There is also the matter of 3G and that is easily dealt with as the all new Nook simply does not have 3G, while with Amazon Kindle you have the choice of 3G + WiFi or WiFi only. The all new Nook is WiFi only although you can buy the 1st edition model with 3G and now that the all new Nook has been released the 1st edition models have seen a price cut while stocks last.

Screen readability has always been an issue but Barnes and Noble have addressed this and now in ereader comparisons there is not too much difference between the two of them.

There is also look and feel. The all new Nook is squatter with rounded edges and I quite like it for that, although some will disagree. Kindle is taller and really looks a bit staid with the keyboard visible.

So Kindle vs Nook - which one now. Reading the details and the Specification Table for ereader comparisons, I am surprised to find myself saying that if I were based in the USA I may be tempted to choose the all new Nook except that it has not got 3G, anyway given that I am not based in the USA it is still Amazon Kindle for me.
