Pocket - Android App

Pocket-Android App

If you're anything like me, you constantly find yourself having to remember login information and passwords. Remember the days not so long ago, when you could write down your ONE password on a post-it note, and stick it to your monitor? Those days, unfortunately, are gone.

Now in the 21st century, almost everything we do is somehow guided or tracked by computers and the internet. The average American today has more than 30 login credentials that are needed to perform work and home related tasks on their computers. Some days, I have a hard time remembering the password just to get onto my own computer at home, let alone all of these website credentials needed now.

Thankfully, developer Tim Clark, has come up with an app for Android phones that makes a serious difference. Pocket is a password manager app that seems cutting edge in many aspects. Now, this is not the first password manager app for Android phones, nor will it be the last, but I assure you, it is one of the best I have seen. Now I won't bore you with the reasons why my opinion is better than anyone else's, but I can tell you that I am a total gadget-geek, and any app for my phone that can simplify my life while looking cool is a must.

Pocket stands out from the rest for a number of reasons. First, the user interface is simple yet modern. The button layouts are organized, the menus are easy to navigate, and the password entries are customizable. Whenever I come across a new website that I have to sign up for, I pull out my phone, and in a minute or less, Pocket helps me get my information recorded for later use. As an added bonus, the developer also has created a desktop client that allows you to change and update Pocket from your Windows PC.

What About Security?

Pocket does a nice job here. The app requires you to set up a master password and a Dropbox account. Once you've done that (with the help of Pocket) you can begin entering your information as you see fit. When you are done with the program, Pocket will automatically clear your phone's clipboard. So if you've copied and pasted a password, thieves that think they're smart won't be able to see your password by pasting again because your clipboard is cleared. Pocket also uses encryption, so someone stealing your phone doesn't mean they will get your information.

Now let's get real folks. Some of you are saying, "I'll never use a password management app like that because some hacker will get all my passwords." Okay, first of all, if someone REALLY wants your password, they're not going to come within 50 feet of you to steal your phone and hack it when they can hack your online account from their gaming chair with the Cheetos smashed into the cushions. Second, do you really think writing your passwords down on those Post-It notes and putting them under the keyboard is any safer?

Support

I really like this app because of the Dropbox that is integrated into it. For those of you unfamiliar with Dropbox, it is an online account management site that stores your documents, personal files, passwords, you name it-its there. The beauty of this integration, is that if you root and flash your phone, or you have problems that cause the total loss of your phone, getting all of your passwords back is as easy as logging into the app again when you get your phone repaired or replaced.

Summary

In my time with my Android smartphone, I have tried almost two-dozen password management apps, some paid-some free. I have even tried a different app for as much as $10 for the full version. Pocket has been the one I have found that deserves five stars. With a clean, easy-to-use interface, as well as security and backup support, this app is one to put on your "apps to download" list. The best part about it, this app is free, (Ad supported) but you can get the ad-free version for just two Washington's in the Android Market. Not too shabby. So if you're looking for a great password managment app, Pocket it the way to go.
