Truckers GPS Systems - whats In Your Truck?

When I got my first GPS I moved it around with me. That is to say it followed me. It went to the truck with me when I left the house to go on the road. Back then the truckers GPS systems I used had preloaded base maps in them for the Homeland (the good old USA) and I would use the maps on my computer that came with the GPS, highlighting the areas my load and unload activity was going to be in and upload those detailed maps into the GPS Unit. Doing LTL (less than truckload more often than not) I would save individual routes in the same mapping program to upload into the GPS unit even though it had auto route calculation functions.

Often times I would put multiple stops in one route depending on what I was doing and all of that. It was mostly in fun and a novelty, making way points for all my customers and truck stops, even when the truck stop was already listed in the points of interest.

When I would get back home the GPS unit would follow me into the pickup truck. New GPS users will use their GPS to navigate around their home turf, weather it is to the grocery store or over to a friends house.

The novelty of mapping your world and getting to see it on the map is just part of the routine of having a new toy. Your wife and friends will have a good time teasing you about it, but that ok.

Then when I could find the time to go hiking I would upload the topographical maps for the area I was in. Of course todays GPS units have enough memory to accommodate all the detailed maps for the US and are included in the preloaded base map. For the novice it is fun to save the breadcrumb trail of your hike and be able to see where you were.

Picking out an old point of interest on the map, like an old iron mine or some similar point of historical interest and to hike to it when there is no trail or road. For some of us this is an enjoyable way to get a little exercise in and what is left of an old remnant may often be a little difficult to identify.

At any rate my first truckers GPS systems were also Automobile and hiking GPS units, as there was not a whole lot of targeted specialization back in the day.

To be quit honest with you I would have to say a lot of the other drivers looked down their noses at me for having a piece of equipment on my truck that only a rookie should need.

I have to say the truckers GPS systems I have used over the years have been fun and I don’t leave home without one. What’s in your truck?

I like your article. Veteran driver to veteran driver. I used to have a breifcase full of road maps. It was hard to give them up for no better reason than that's the way it was. Now I have a map on my phone. I still carry an atlas because I like to look at the big picture, but I make very good use of my Garmin. Sci-fi and hi-tech aren't so scary after all. Happy Trails to you, until we meet again!
